Objectives and competences
• Knowledge of product design history and styles
• Knowledge of the basic influencing factors in the design process,
• Ability to define key design components according to the chosen design style
• Knowledge of the complex interplay of design discipline,
• Understanding the role and importance of individual design components,
• Understanding the dimension of design discipline in relation to social, cultural and economic frameworks,
• Ability to design simple products based on product reference list.
Content (Syllabus outline)
• Insight in design history, theory, definitions, terminology, etimology, branch nomenclature,
• Basic frame cognition of the discipline, constitutive cognition of engineering design elements and interdisciplinary frame,
• Insight in formal organization, professions interlace, independence and cooperation, interlace of interdisciplinary methodologies and research methods,
• Confrontation with primary exploring and designing simple forms, with analyse of solutions and with programming of design process,
• Colection of object fund and design of subjective preferenced portfolio,
• Systematic exploring and developing primary creativity
• Design projects and simple industrial objects practicing,
• Acquainting with responsibilities of designers process and their consequences.
Learning and teaching methods
• frontal lectures,
• practical work at lab work
• preparation and public presentation of the seminar work,
• discussion.
Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
• place the product in the historic / style framework of product design
• explain and justify the importance of design components on the product under consideration
• design the selected product in a specific design style
• place the designed product in social, cultural and economic contexts
• independently design the forms of various simpler products
• independently present conceptual solutions for simpler products
Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes
Knowledge transfer in small groups and direct contact among teachers and students mark studying at study course Design at Faculty for Mechanical Engineering. This kind of master-class principle enables individual proceeding of single student and sharpening of his personality and artistic profile in course of study.

Prerequisits
Conditions for fulfilling study obligations:
Completed compulsory tasks at the lab work.
Seminar work must be submitted and presented at least one week before examination date - prerequisite for the theoretic exam!
Additional information on implementation and assessment Oral exam (knowledge in the field of theory and praxis in design), seminar work (theoretical research work in field of theory and praxis in design) and project (independently performed compulsory project tasks) must be assessed positive for the overall positive grade.
