Objectives and competences
Objectives:
• to understand the term Engineering design,
• to distinguish the particular ranking and stages of engineering design,
• to recognize the engineering materials and general guidelines of engineering design,
• to define the advanced tools of engineering design.
Competences:
• knowledge of the field of engineering design,
• combine the previously gained knowledge for solutions of basic engineering problems in the field of engineering design
Content (Syllabus outline)
Lectures
• Basic concepts of engineering design.
• Stages of engineering design (planning, conceiving, dimensioning, designing).
• General guidelines by engineering design.
• Modern engineering materials.
• Advanced tools and approaches by engineering design.
Tutorials and seminar work
Tutorials supplement lectures with practical solutions of problems in the field of engineering design.
Learning and teaching methods
• frontal lectures,
• labour work,
• seminar work.
Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
• to design the simple engineering components,
• to use the advanced engineering tools (3D modelling, 3D scanning, 3D printing) by engineering design.
Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes
• Communication skills: Communication with use of visual elements
• Use of information technology: use of various communication tools for creation of visual elements and products.
• Organisation skills: Design elements and products.
• Problem solving: Recognising defining and solving user’s problems, when planning complex solutions.
Working in a group: inner and outer communications.

Prerequisits
Basic graphic design or product design knowledge (visual elements, space, light/dark, colour, composition, typography, logotype, …), ability to use necessary software.
Additional information on implementation and assessment Oral exam (Knowledge in the field of creative form design), seminar work (theoretical research work in field of creative design)
and project (independent design of the product) must be assessed positive for the overall positive grade.
Note:
• A student may replace the oral exam with midterm exams.
