Objectives and competences

In this course students: Consolidate and upgrade basic knowledge about market failures and the role of the government (state) in the economy and specifically in the health sector. They learn use the economic tools to analyze the health sector.

Content (Syllabus outline)

1. The role of government (state) in the economy and in the health sector 2. Market failures and government (state) interventions in the health sector 3. The main economic analysis of the health and health care (supply, demand, costs, efficiency) 4. Economics of social insurance

In this course students: Students: 1. Acquire deeper understanding of how market failures affect the health sector and the government's (state) response. (PILO 2a) 2. Know to apply economic analysis tools to health and health care. (PILO 2a, 2b) 3. Gain economic understanding of social insurance. (PILO 2a) 4. Acquire the ability to analyze and synthesize basic theoretical and empirical knowledge in the field of public sector and health economics. (PILO 2a) 5. Acquire knowledge for the economic interpretation of current issues in the field of health, health care and social insurance. The PILO label (i.e., Programme Intended Learning Outcomes) defines the contribution of each listed intended learning outcome of a course towards achieving the general and/or subject-specific competencies or learning outcomes acquired through the programme.
