Objectives and competences

Student: • Understand problems of the society related with aging • Understand the concept of holistic approach of the elderly • at home and in institutional environment • understand the needs and abilities in old age and modern programs for active and healthy aging • Understand concern for the quality care of elderly in order to ensure their safety • Understand changes and approaches and principles of working with people with dementia • Understand the possibilities and importance of research in gerontological nursing • Develop skills of reflection and self-control of one’s own thinking, experience and behaviour in work with elderly

Content (Syllabus outline)

• A holistic approach to dealing with elderly at home and in institutions, and collaboration with various providers for quality aging. • Modern programs and technology for active and healthy ageing • Integrated nursing care for the elderly. • Strategies of developing the protection of elderly in the world and in Slovenia • Long-term care and nursing • Quality of care, quality of life and ensuring safety of the elderly. • Psychophysical changes connected to dementia and approaches for working with people with dementia and their relatives. • Research in gerontology nursing • Care for staff, working with the elderly.

Learning and teaching methods

Lectures (auditory and e-lectures), seminar (auditory and e-seminars), written assignments group work

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Student will be able to: • Describe problems of a society associated with aging • Explain the concept of holistic approach for elderly • Describe the needs and abilities in old age and modern programs for active and healthy aging • Explain the importance of quality gerontological care to ensure their safety • Explain the possibilities and importance of the research in gerontological nursing • Use multiple social skills in dealing with elderly • Critically reflects on their own attitudes and practices in different situations in gerontological nursing

Prerequisits

Prerequisites for taking the course: None. Conditions for fulfilling study obligations: Active participation in a tutorial and the successful completion and presentation of the research project are required for taking the written exam.
