Objectives and competences

Student will: • understand the meaning of nursing theory for nursing science and discipline. • be able to critically debate about evolution, scientific philosophical tenets and origins of theory and science development in nursing, • appraise ways of knowing in nursing, • be able to understand the process of constructing/developing a theory, • be able to critically debate about differences between a theory and a model, • be able to critique theories and conceptual models for nursing, • be able to critique a nursing concept, • be able to select an appropriate theory for practice and the theoretical framework in the research project, • be able to implement theory in nursing practice, • be able to discuss about limitations in using theory and critically analyse relationships between nursing theory, research and practice, • be able to discuss about the importance of a nursing theories to justify the theory based practice.

• Historical evolution, philosophical tenets, paradigm and origins of theory. • Nursing science development. • Knowledge and knowing and fundamental patterns of knowing in nursing. • Strategies for theory development. • Nursing theories and nursing models. • Critical analysis and evaluation of a nursing theory • Concept analysis. • Applying theory to practice. • Linkages between theory, practice and research. • Interpersonal relationships and nursing theories. • Nursing theory and new nursing roles. • Caring theories in nursing

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Student • critically evaluate the meaning of nursing theory for nursing science and discipline, • discuss of the historical evolution, scientific philosophical tenets, and science development in nursing, • evaluate way of knowing, • critique the purpose and methods of constructing nursing theories and evaluate strategies used in nursing and other disciplines for theory generation and development, • compare models and theories, • argues the choice of the selected theory for a research project, • for a research project analyse and evaluate selected nursing theory for their potential utilization in nursing practice, education and research using different models and criteria for theory analysis and evaluation, • for a research project critique a selected nursing concept using the process of concept analysis, • argues the theoretical framework of the research project.
