Objectives and competences

Student will be able to: • critically review debates of qualitative research methodologies and methods, • advance knowledge, skills and application of the qualitative research process, • independently prepare and evaluate qualitative research proposal, • evaluate the appropriateness of their chosen research design and methodology, • critically analyse and interpret qualitative data, • critically examine the different perspectives on and application of rigour in qualitative research, • independently solve research questions regarding qualitative research.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Theoretical, philosophical and practice debates of qualitative research. • Philosophy of science for development of qualitative methodology. • Review and discussion of different qualitative research methodologies. • Selection of appropriate method for research project. • Approaches and strategies of qualitative data collection. • Sampling in qualitative research. • Approaches and methods of qualitative data analysis. • Criteria for rigour of qualitative research • Ethics in qualitative research. • Implication qualitative research findings for nursing practice, education and administration and future research

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Student • argue about the theoretical, philosophical, and practice debates related to differing research methodologies in research, • argue about the historical and philosophical development of qualitative research methodologies, • evaluate a range of factors to be taken into consideration when gaining permission to access research settings, promote good relations and effective communication with participants and other key stakeholders, • justify the choice of philosophy, qualitative methodology and methods according to the design research question, • apply qualitative methodologies and methods to research questions, data collection and analysis, • select criteria of rigour in qualitative research, • evaluates the ethical issues particular to theirs study.
