Objectives and competences
1. Review and critically appraise the literature on caring and apply this to emotions and nursing.
2. Examine different ways of conceptualising emotions such as emotional labour, emotional intelligence, intimacy and compassionate care and their relevance to nursing care and practice.
3. Identify a range of sensitive, ethical and personal issues and potential dilemmas which arise in caring for patients and the emotion management required.
4. Analyze and explore the nature of nurse-patient-carer relationships in different clinical contexts and the associated emotion work involved.
5. Identify areas for future research relevant to the field of emotions and caring in nursing.
Content (Syllabus outline)
The course will include:
• Women as carers and nursing as women’s work
• The nature of nursing and caring in different clinical and social contexts
• The invisibility of the emotional work of caring
• Exploring experiences and feelings associated with caring relationships
• Managing emotions and stress
• Managing intimate and sensitive issues in nursing
• Promoting positive relationships between nurses, patients and their families in the workplace

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
Students will be able to:
1. Critically discuss the literature on caring and emotions and indicate the relevance to nursing.
2. Discuss the concepts of emotional labour and emotional intelligence and their application to nursing.
3. Review and evaluate the literature on emotional labour, emotional intelligence, intimacy, empathy, spirituality and compassion.
4. Discuss factors which affect health care systems and nurses' and other health care professionals’ ability to manage complex and sensitive issues in patient care.
5. Show understanding of the mechanisms that can be used to promote, encourage and support good care.
6. Explore and develop awareness of personal feelings, experiences and knowledge and their role in nursing care and practice.
7. Reflect on personal nursing experiences, analyse events and critically appraise the situation with reference to appropriate literature.
