Objectives and competences
Students will get familiar with various chronic diseases and the ways chronic patients learn to live with and adapt to chronic diseases and how diseases affect the family. They will get familiar with critical analyses of various concepts related to life with chronic diseases.
They will understand the importance of cooperation between health professionals and patients and their families and be able to discuss the importance of good cooperation between health care professions and how evidence based health care can be used among chronically ill people.
Content (Syllabus outline)
The aim of the course is to introduce the students to different manifestations of chronic illness, how the chronically ill learn to live with and adapt to his illness and how the illness affects the family. Emphasis will be on critical analyses of diverse concepts associated with life with chronic illness and cooperation between health care practitioners and patients and their families.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
Upon completion of the course the student should:
• be familiar with and be able to discuss and use in their work, different theories on how people with chronic illness recognize and manage their disease symptoms and how this affects self-care,
• be able to apply the Stages of Change Model when motivating people with chronic diseases to change behavior.
• be able to discern the need for and provide education and support for the chronically ill and their families,
