Objectives and competences
• Develop a critical understanding of different philosophical perspectives on personhood, and of the concepts, principles and theories underpinning person-centred practice.
• Critically explore the ethical issues arising when working inter-professionally and collaboratively with people, families and communities.
• Critically discuss communication strategies and relationships with people, families and communities enabling the person to fulfil their potential.
• Creatively devise person-centred approaches to the prevention of ill health and to the promotion of the health and well-being of people, families and communities.
Content (Syllabus outline)
• Theories of personhood from different philosophical perspectives and key concepts of person-centredness.
• Person-centred practice at individual, team, organisational and systems levels, including strategic frameworks for person-centred practice.
• Understanding ‘self’ and what it means to practise as a person-centred practitioner (relational aspects of care, judgement and ethical decision-making, the development of expertise).
• Research methodologies connected with different world-views (rationalism, empiricism, interpretivism, constructivism).
• Use of evidence in practice including methods of dissemination, implementation, translation of evidence into practice, and strategies for evaluating processes and outcomes in person-centred practice.
