Objectives and competences

Student will: • be able to critically review the theoretical definitions and philosophical debates of mixed methods research, • gain advanced knowledge and skills for application of the research process in mixed methods research, • independently prepare mixed methods research proposal, • be able to evaluate the appropriateness of the chosen methodology, research design and methods of mixed methods research, • critically examine and apply criteria for evaluating the quality of mixed methods research, • independently carry out a mixed method systematic review.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Theoretical definition and basic features of mixed methods research. • The historical background and the nature of the mixed methods research. • Philosophy of science of mixed methods methodology. • Overview of basic and advanced mixed methods research designs. • Overview of methods and techniques in mixed method research. • Selection, justification and designing of an appropriate mixed method research design. • Approaches and methods of data collection in mixed methods research. • Sampling in mixed methods research. • Approaches and methods of data analysis and data integration in mixed methods research. • Evaluating and evaluation criteria of the quality of mixed methods research. • Mixed method systematic review.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Upon completion of the course student will be able to: • explain the theoretical definitions and the nature of mixed methods research, • explain the historical and philosophical development of mixed methods research, • evaluates mixed methods research proposal • justify the chosen research methodology, sampling, data collection, data analysis and data integration • the quality of mixed method research • prepare a mixed method systematic review.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

• information gathering, • use of information technology: use programs tools for preparing and editing documents, presentations and citation, • writing research reports and scientific articles, • verbal communication skills: presentation of the project.
