Objectives and competences
To introduce the fundamental principles and concepts that underpins the care of the patient with cancer. The module covers the current knowledge on cancer pathology and cancer treatments. As part of the lectures, the topics that relate to the early detection and prevention of cancer will be discussed. Additionally issues such as the provision of quality care through the effective management of cancer symptoms, including complementary and alternative interventions, will be discussed highlighting the role of the nursing science.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
• To be aware of basic concepts and principles of Oncology Nursing
• To implement nursing care plan based on the general symptomatology of cancer.
• To plan evidence-based nursing interventions for the prevention, early detection and management of treatment-related side-effects and complications.
• To be able to assess the cancer effect on the patient’s and the family’s psychological state and be able to implement appropriate management strategies.
• Adopt the principles of cancer prevention and early detection of cancer and be able to appropriately educate patients and healthy populations.
