Objectives and competences
This module aims to facilitate students to develop knowledge and skills for palliative and end of life care and a sound theoretical knowledge base for key issues impacting on care.
Content (Syllabus outline)
Concept and philosophy of palliative care: historical background and principles of palliative care; scope of palliative care: malignant and non malignant
Evidence based practice and challenges in undertaking research in palliative and end of life care; palliative care research priorities; methodological and ethical considerations
Psychosocial care: interpersonal communication in a therapeutic relationship
Professional Practice: use of tools to assess and provide holistic assessment; multi-professional approach to palliative care

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
On completion of this course the student:
• Critically appraise the concepts underpinning and philosophy of palliative and end of life care
• Identify methods and approaches to undertake holistic assessment to meet needs of patient and family
• Demonstrate understanding of strategic drivers and global developments in palliative care
• Critically appraise research issues for palliative and end of life care
• Use reflective and effective communication and interpersonal skills for palliative and end of life care

Additional information on implementation and assessment Formative and summative assessment will be used. Students will be asked to examine strategic developments in palliative and end of life care and the impact they have on the care of a person with life limiting illness and their family.
