Objectives and competences

This module aims to facilitate students to develop knowledge and skills for palliative and end of life care and a sound theoretical knowledge base for key issues impacting on care.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Concept and philosophy of palliative care: historical background and principles of palliative care; scope of palliative care: malignant and non malignant Evidence based practice and challenges in undertaking research in palliative and end of life care; palliative care research priorities; methodological and ethical considerations Psychosocial care: interpersonal communication in a therapeutic relationship Professional Practice: use of tools to assess and provide holistic assessment; multi-professional approach to palliative care

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

On completion of this course the student: • Critically appraise the concepts underpinning and philosophy of palliative and end of life care • Identify methods and approaches to undertake holistic assessment to meet needs of patient and family • Demonstrate understanding of strategic drivers and global developments in palliative care • Critically appraise research issues for palliative and end of life care • Use reflective and effective communication and interpersonal skills for palliative and end of life care
