Objectives and competences

Student will be able: • Evaluate the importance of health literacy. • To use the components of health literacy and their impact on palliative care. • Get to know national projects to raise public awareness about palliative care. • Integration of theory into practice.

Content (Syllabus outline)

1. Health literacy is an essential skills and situational resources needed for people to find, understand, evaluate, communicate, and use information and services in a variety of forms across various settings throughout their life course to promote health and wellbeing. 2. Enhancing health literacy in populations and systems is critical to achieving health equity. 3. In times of public health need across traditional borders, the inter-sectoral and international perspectives are more urgent than ever. 4. Death literacy is a part of health literacy. Death literacy is defined as a set of knowledge and skills that make it possible to gain access to understand and act upon end-of-life and death care options. That means a society, where people and communities have the practical know-how needed to plan well for end of life. 5. What means this? This means shifting focus from “talking about it” to transforming this conversation into one of deep community engagement, social action, insight, and empowerment. Being death literate strengthens our ability to care, creating compassionate communities.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

On completion of this course the student will be able to: • classify the factors that affect health literacy • explain the role of literacy in palliative care • explain the basics of health legislation • distinguish between health promotion and health education • apply theoretical knowledge in practice
