Objectives and competences

Student will be able: • to discuss about and differentiate main working methods and organizational approaches in public health, • to use the connections between public health and clinical medicine in solving major public health problems, • Being able to both analyse and evaluate policies, programmes and activities implementation in carrying out effectively public health methods. • to use and be aware that better health of population could be reached only if close cooperation between public health and clinical medicine in planning, conducting and evaluation of measures will be established.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Presentation of the development of public health, public health activities and main elements of European health policy, fundamental programs and approaches in public health, planning and activities in public health. Presentation of socio-economic determinants of health. Presentation of the importance of lifestyle for health preservation. Learn about public health development with special emphasis on second part of 20th century. Activities in WHO regional office for Europe and in EC and their major influence on development of public health in Slovenia will be presented. Special emphasis will be given to health situation. Presentation of 6 major public health problems in Slovenia. Policies and strategies of health protection (at global, regional and national levels). Regional differences and factors determining policy strategy and health protection standards): Health status of the popupation; Health care – organisation, financing, management; Additional content: Presentation of demographic trends, the concept of aging and public health impact on society and the health system Healthy aging and prevention. Case studies of integrated care. Chronic disorders. Multimorbidity. Polypharmacy.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

On completion of this course the student will be able to: • understand that main task of public health is to plan and conduct activities to reduce burden; of diseases, premature mortality and disability in population as a whole or in its specific groups, • explain main public health problems, effective measures for reducing those problems and obstacles that hinder more effective work, • search for with working methods used in public health, • explain the basic knowledge on health information system and its perspectives, • understand the principles of evidence based public health, • interpret possibilities and limitation of public health.
