Objectives and competences

The student will: • Understand the historical, philosophical and ethical foundations of palliative and hospice care. • Understand the European guidelines and legal framework for palliative and hospice care. • Gain an insight into the current status and development of palliative and hospice care in Slovenia and its organisational framework. • Learn to differentiate between primary and specialised palliative care and acquire knowledge about their implementation at different levels of healthcare. • Develop an understanding of the role and structure of teams in palliative and hospice care and recognise the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. • Understand the functioning and importance of the mobile palliative care network and its role in the holistic care of patients.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Historical overview of palliative and hospice care: the evolution of the concept of end-of-life care over time. • European trends in palliative and hospice care: international standards, guidelines and best practise in palliative care. • Directions for the development of palliative and hospice care in Slovenia: Analysis of existing practises and implementation challenges. • Organisation of palliative and hospice care at different levels of health care: primary and specialised palliative care. • Coordination of palliative care: the importance of an integrated approach and coordination of different healthcare activities. • Teamwork in palliative care: primary and specialist teams and their tasks. • Mobile palliative care network: organisation, role and functioning of mobile units in patient care. • Hospice care teams: interdisciplinary co-operation for high-quality care at the end of life.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

On completion of this course the student: • Describe the historical development of palliative and hospice care and analyse its significance in the modern healthcare system. • Compare the European guidelines for palliative and hospice care and their implementation in Slovenia. • Explain the main directions in the development of palliative care in Slovenia and distinguish between primary and specialised palliative care. • Analyse the organisation of palliative care at different levels of health care. • Discuss the importance of teamwork in palliative and hospice care and describe the roles of the different professional groups within these teams. • Propose verbal and written solutions to the challenges of coordinating palliative care and improving the functioning of mobile teams.
