Students with special needs and special status face special circumstances or challenges which prevent or hinder their full and effective inclusion and participation in the study process. In order to acquire the necessary knowledge and competences and successfully complete their studies, these students are entitled to certain adjustments. At the University of Maribor, we strive to adjust our studies to all such students. You can also find stories of individual students with special needs and special status among the
stories of UM students and graduates.
In accordance with Article 69.a of the Higher Education Act students with special needs are:
- blind or partially sighted students or students with a visual impairment,
- deaf and hard of hearing students,
- students with speech impairments,
- students with reduced mobility,
- students with a long-term illness,
- students with autism spectrum disorders, and
- students with emotional and behavioural disorders.
Student with special status are:
- students - top-level athletes,
- students - recognised artists,
- other students participating in international competitions, and
- students - parents until the start of their child's compulsory schooling.
Granting the Status
Students may apply for the status of a student with special needs and/or special status during their bachelor's or master's studies. As a rule, the student submits the application when enrolling in the first year of study, higher years of study or in the graduate year. The application is submitted to the faculty's Student Affairs Office and decided upon by the faculty's commission responsible for academic affairs, which adopts a decision on whether the requested special status can be granted or not. As a rule, the student is granted the status for one academic year with the possibility of extension.
The procedure for obtaining the status for different categories of students and the rights and duties arising from an individual status are regulated by the Rules on Students with a Special Status at the University of Maribor and by the Rules on the Study Process of Students with Disabilities at the University of Maribor. The status of a student with special needs or special status may be granted to a student who accompanies the application for the status with relevant evidence according to the type of the status he or she has requested.
August 2023: The Olympic Committee of Slovenia - the Association of Sports Federations stopped issuing certificates on the status of registered or categorized athletes, as the official source is the
publicly available records on the OKS-ZŠZ website (available only in Slovene). If students prove their entitlement to special status with a certificate from the Olympic Committee of Slovenia, they circle the proof in the application, and the faculty will check the status in the official records of OKS-ZŠZ.
