Other obligations

The courses are connected horizontally and vertically. The theoretical courses (Introduction to the Study of Art History, Written Sources for Art History, History, History of Art and Introduction to Art Topography in the 1st year, Introduction to Iconography and Form and Context in the 2nd year) are concentrated in the first two years of study and provide a basis for the understanding of other courses: the general overview History of Art I-V and courses that focus on the individual artistic field (architecture, sculpture, painting, applied art, photography). In the introductory part, the courses dealing with the individual artistic fields familiarise the student with the basic tools for the understanding of the discussed contents. This is followed by a chronological overview. The general overview (History of Art I-V) deals with art phenomena in chronological order. The acquired knowledge from the theoretical courses and courses which allow for a chronological overview of the art productions is the basis used by the student in his/her practical training in the 5th semester and upgraded in the 6th semester with the preparation for the graduation thesis and its defence. The students deepen their knowledge with elective courses which they choose in accordance with their own interests. The courses are integrated among each other also horizontally. The general chronological overview (History of Art I-IV) overlaps with historical overviews of individual art disciplines (History of Architecture, History of the Decorative Arts, History of Photography, History of Painting and History of Sculpture), and it is possible to broaden both through elective courses. The latter can be divided into two basic groups: the first reinforces the knowledge of the general chronological overview in each individual period (Selected Chapters from the Art of the Middle Ages, Selected Chapters from Early Modern Art, Selected Chapters from the 19th Century, Selected Chapters from the Art of the 20th and 21st Centuries) while the second group teaches students to focus on individual fields of art (Selected Chapters from the History of Architecture and Urbanism, Selected Chapters from Contemporary Design, Selected Chapters from the History of Painting and Graphic Art, Selected Chapters from the History of Sculpture, History of Drawings). Tutors help students in designing the syllabus by choosing the electives from an established set of courses, depending on the student's interest and depending on the already achieved proficiency in the mandatory courses. Since the programme is double-major, the knowledge shifts also between the two chosen study programmes. The student completes the double major study programme with the completion of all the study obligations required by the study programme in both parts of the study programme and by gaining at least 180 ECTS points, namely 90 ECTS in one part and 90 ECTS in the other part of the double major study programme.

Assesment criteria

The examining and grading system is regulated with the Statute of the University of Maribor: https://www.um.si/univerza/dokumentni-center/akti/GlavniDokumenti2013/Statut%20Univerze%20v%20Mariboru%20(NPB%203).pdf and the Rules on Examination and Grading at the University of Maribor, no. A4/2009-41 AG: https://www.um.si/univerza/dokumentni-center/akti/GlavniDokumenti2013/Pravilnik%202009.pdf. Accordingly, the methods and forms of examining and grading knowledge in the curricula are defined for each individual study unit of an individual study programme. Methods of continuous examining and grading of knowledge are encouraged, which enables students to continuously monitor their own progress and assess the acquired knowledge and skills. Depending on the individual study units and the order of their implementation, the individual obligations of students are mutually coordinated in such a way that some study units require more continuous work, others a greater deal of independent research work (preparation of a quality seminar paper), some units are completed with written or oral exams. All curricula are published on the web link: http://www.ff.um.si/studenti/studijski-programi/prva-stopnja/umetnostna-zgodovina/dvopr-prva-stopnja-um-zgo.dot (Accreditations of study programmes and curricula by years of enrolment). In addition, students have access to AIPS UM (Academic Information Subsystem of the University of Maribor), which provides insight into the activities of individual students (exam records, detailed insight into the number of exam attempts and all completed and uncompleted obligations).
