Objectives and competences

- Aim of this subject is to teach students to describe basics in railway safety and in transport process. They will list basic safety analysis and mathematical models for calculating safety and reliability. They will identify signal-safety devices in railway traffic process and differentiate the usage of signal safety devices. With support of simulation they will show the working principles of signal safety devices in real life.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Basic security and devices signaling concepts (mechanical, electromechanical, relay, electronic signal interlocking devices) Theory of security and reliability of railway traffic Security analysis Mathematical models of security and reliability Human influence on the security Railway safety systems (basic elements and modules) Train path security Train control drive system Level crossing security

Learning and teaching methods

Lecture and practice are foreseen, theoretically knowledge are examined with paper tests. Seminar work from concrete real example on signal safety devices is also foreseen to be done with software Opentrack.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

After completing this subject, the students will be able to: describe basic theory of safety and reliability in railways List basic mathematical safety models and safety analysis Identify main signal safety devices in railway traffic Differentiate working principles and usage of signal safety device on the open track and in the station Show the working of signal safety devices in real life application

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Acquired knowledge and skills used for expert qualification for work in railway traffic
