Objectives and competences

The objectives of this course enable students to know and understand basic concepts of urban planning, i.e. different factors that influence urban development including the legal framework. Students will be able to carry out spatial analyses and design simple urban plans

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Introduction to sustainable urban development: basic terms and concepts • Historical overiew of the organisation of urban structures • Principles and objectives of urban development; factors and impacts on the development of urban structures Methods and techniques of urban planning; institutional and legal framework ; type and levels of plans: national, regional, municipal; land use; housing typology, transport, open public spaces, green spaces • Planning processes: analyses, information, resources, techniques, digital applications • Design and planning concepts of smaller urban plans

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Knowledge and Understanding: On completion of this course, the student will be able to: • define and apply basic concepts of urban planning • identify and interpret patterns of urban fabrics from different epochs of urban development • identify and analyse the elements which affect the perception of urban space • analyse and evaluate existing urban plans • design/plan a smaller sustainable settlement using housing typology and urban parameters

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Communication skills: written expression in the written exam, oral expression in presentations, articulation of ideas when graphically drawing the plan Use of information technology: use of GIS applications and CAD tools to collect information, carry out analyses and draw urban plans.
