Objectives and competences

– to inform about different points of view and examples of interior design – to learn about important elements of interiors and test them with practical case-studies – to deepen knowledge of historical and contemporary approaches to the design and understanding of interiors - to strengthen awareness of sustainable design principles in interior design and the use of natural as well as locally available materials or their reuse, circular design

Content (Syllabus outline)

LECTURES – introduction, meaning and role of interior design (interior space and people, living comfort, human senses, social logic of space) – short overview of historical development of interiors – interior architecture (composition, planes, scale, movement, accessibility) – types of interior – furniture design (characteristics, positioning) – materials in interior design – materials for floors, walls, ceilings – lamps and light – use of colours (colour schemes) – orientation systems within buildings – planning the interior, concepts, communication with the customer – sustainable materials and planning, reuse, upcycling, use of recycled materials EXERCISES The exercises supplement the content of the lectures with practical examples for the analysis and planning of the interior space and construction of the selected pieces of furniture.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

– student will assimilate fundamental knowledge in the field of understanding and planning the interior space – student will gain knowledge of the elements of the interior design and know the characteristics of interiors for different purposes – student will use gained theoretical knowledge upon a practical analysis and concept development of a new space or piece of furniture – student will develop the ability to design sustainable interior spaces using digital tools, taking into account principles of energy efficiency, circular economy (reconfiguration, multifunctionality, adaptability...), and user’s wellbeing
