The graduate of the Programme knows and understands robots and robotics, CNC systems and the principles that are the foundation of Industry 4.0.

They are able to design and program systems and maintain them with quality. Mechatronics students participate in various PKP projects.

Candidates also acquire quality knowledge and competencies in the field of Soft Skills, so that they can get involved in business processes.

The university Study Programme Mechatronics at the first Bologna level builds the basic and applied knowledge of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics, which an individual will need to be able to get involved in work in the economy after graduation. The basic task of the Programme is to prepare candidates for further studies at the second Bologna level. After completing the first Bologna level, graduates are employable in the fields covered by Mechatronics, but they are more intended for further study at the second level, where they will gain in-depth knowledge and specialise appropriately.

    The study program was confirmed at the University of Maribor Senate meeting on the 27th of October 2006 and was accepted by the Council for Higher Education of Republic of Slovenia on the 8th of December 2006. The study program was confirmed again at the University of Maribor Senate meeting on the 18th of December 2012 and was accepted by The Slovenian Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education on the 20th of March 2014.

    Advancement criteria of a study programme

    Conditions for transition to the 2nd study year: Students advance to the 2nd study year if they collect at least 54 ECTS credits by passing the 1st year exams. Students who do not fulfil all the obligations for advancement may, at their request, exceptionally be granted enrolment by the Commission for Study Affairs of a University Member if they have fulfilled more than half of the 1st year study obligations (more than 30 ECTS), but only in case of justified reasons set out in the Statute of the University of Maribor, and if it is expected that they will fulfil the obligations. Conditions for transition to 3rd study year Students advance to the 3rd study year if they have passed all the exams of the 1st study year (60 ECTS) and if they collect at least another 48 ECTS credit points with the passed exams of the 2nd study year. Students who do not meet all the obligations for advancement may, at their request, be granted enrolment in the 3rd study year by the Commission for Study Affairs of a University Member if they have passed all 1st study year exams (60 ECTS) and fulfilled more than half of the 2nd year study obligations (more than 30 ECTS), if the obligations could not be fulfilled for justified reasons which are determined in the Statute of the University of Maribor, and if it is expected that the students will fulfil the obligations. Transition under extraordinary conditions: A student who has not completed all the obligations for transition to a higher study year and has justified reasons for this, may exceptionally be granted enrolment in a higher study year at his/her request by the Commission for Study Affairs of FERI and FS, wherein a deadline is set within which he/she must fulfil the missing study obligations. The justified reasons are set out in the Statute of the University of Maribor. Repetition of the study year: A student who has not fulfilled all the obligations for transition to a higher study year may be granted repetition of the study year by the Commission for Study Affairs of a University Member at his/her request if he/she has fulfilled at least half of the enrolled study year obligations (at least 30 ECTS). The Commission may also grant the repetition of the study year to a student who has completed less than half of the study obligations of the enrolled study year (less than 30 ECTS), if justified reasons have arisen, as stipulated in the Statute of the University of Maribor.

    Criteria for completing separate parts of a study programme

    The study programme is comprehensive and does not provide for the completion of individual parts of the programme.

    Study advancement options

    A graduate of the study programme for obtaining a first-degree university education may continue with master’s studies in the second-degree study programmes in accordance with the conditions determined by the higher education institution announcing the postgraduate study programme.

    Examination and assessment of students’ learning outcomes is carried out in accordance with the criteria and methods defined in the Rules on Examination and Assessment of Knowledge at the University of Maribor, available at https://www.um.si/univerza/dokumentni-center/akti/Strani/studij-na-um.aspx. Criteria and methods of assessing the knowledge within an individual study subject are part of the SUBJECT-SPECIFICation and are publicly available on the website https://aips.um.si/PredmetiBP5/main.asp. For all subjects in all study programmes of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, knowledge assessment is regulated by a single "Assessment Scale" which is available at https://www.fs.um.si/studij/informacije-o-studiju/izpitni-sistem/. For all subjects in all study programmes of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, knowledge assessment is regulated by a single "Assessment Scale" which is available at https://feri.um.si/studij/vprasanja-in-odgovori/ Methods of ongoing assessment and evaluation of knowledge are encouraged, thus enabling students to monitor their own progress in their studies.

    Main study programme objectives

    The basic goal of the joint interdisciplinary university undergraduate study programme Mechatronics is to educate a broad-minded graduate who, in addition to knowledge and understanding, will also demonstrate independence, creativity, innovation and critical thinking in solving problems in the field of mechatronics. Students of this study programme will be able to transfer the acquired theoretical and professional knowledge into practice and solve problems in work environments by studying the scientific foundations of the programme, technological foundations, applied and system knowledge and individual and business knowledge. By studying a variety of theoretical and professional content, they will gain an overview of the broader field of mechatronics which will expand their conceptual world, strengthen their ability to generalize knowledge and help them to acquire knowledge, connect knowledge from different fields and find new sources of knowledge to be mobile and flexible, but at the same time oriented enough to be able to solve complex problems. We will realize the expectations of students, employers, and society as a whole through modern teaching concepts that are in tune with scientific and research work, by encouraging creativity, independent work and the transfer of theoretical knowledge into practice. The stated goals of the study programme are the starting point for checking the learning outcomes of students both within individual subject contents and in the final diploma theses.

    General competences of graduates, gained at a study programme

    Students of the interdisciplinary university study programme of the 1st level of Mechatronics will acquire appropriate competencies in the educational process, so that they will be able to perform the set tasks in accordance with the standards of work performance. We will enable graduates to acquire quality knowledge, as well as skills, abilities, values, and a positive self-image which, in addition to knowledge, significantly contribute to work success. Graduates of the study programme will master research methods, procedures and processes in the field of mechatronics and will be able to design, plan, construct, manufacture and maintain mechatronic products, machines and plants, with professional criticism, self-critical judgment and responsibility, taking into account professional excellence, social utility, ethical responsibility, commitment to professional ethics and criteria for the environmental integrity of their creations. They will be able to design, plan, and manufacture mechatronic products, machines, devices, and complex plants in such a way that functional, design, quality, cost, and environmental criteria are met on the basis of acquired basic knowledge of basic natural sciences, specific knowledge of mechanical engineering, electrical design and computer programming, as well as interdisciplinary connections between the aforementioned specific knowledge which is the most important virtue of a mechatronics engineer, and knowledge in the field of environmental protection, as well as good engineering practice, all supported by computer and communication technology. Graduates will creatively and innovatively connect theory and practice, especially with project-organized study, as well as with the help of organized project work during their studies. A project-organized study, in which a small group of 3-4 students will develop, design, and manufacture a mechatronic product under the guidance of a professional mentor, will enable students to develop professional skills and a sense of teamwork, which is the basis of any modern engineering work. At the same time, students will develop a positive professional self-image through project work, which makes it easier to identify students with a profession such as a mechatronics engineer. The interdisciplinary orientation of study content will help them to be more creative, innovative, and flexible. They will be able to analyse problems, eliminate insignificant factors, make a synthesis, predict possible solutions and consequences. They will be independent at work, and at the same time they will develop communication skills and group work in the domestic and international environment. The stated general competencies derive from the basic subject content of the programme and outline the general, basic character of the graduate. During the study process, not only the knowledge deepens, but also the attitude towards the use of this knowledge. In this way, the educational component is also related to the educational.

    Subject specific competences of graduates, gained on a study programme

    The subject-specific competences will enable the student of the mechatronics programme to efficiently perform activities in the work process to which it relates. A subject-specific competence means the direct use of specialist or applied knowledge and is developed in simulations, case studies and in the direct use of knowledge in problem solving. The graduate of the interdisciplinary university study programme of the 1st level "MEHATRONIKA" is an expert with theoretical and methodological knowledge for solving concrete problems in planning, managing and performing demanding professional tasks in the field of mechatronics and in various jobs from metal processing industry to electrical industry, and also for work in engineering offices for the design of mechatronic products. The study programme enables the graduate to acquire broad knowledge by connecting theoretical concepts with professional and applied ones and to develop the ability to transfer and apply theoretical knowledge in practice for creative solving of professional and work problems. It uses scientific methods, draws on existing knowledge and seeks new sources. The student will understand the general structure of the basic discipline and connect different knowledge between its subdisciplines. He/she will be professional and critical, proactive, and independent, and at the same time communicative with the possibility of communication in the profession and between professions, within organizations and externally with partners and clients. During the study, the graduate develops professional criticism and responsibility, initiative and independence in decision-making and leading more demanding work. The students are able to place new information and interpretations in the context of the core discipline. Through professional practice under the guidance of a qualified mentor, they acquire the ability that enables the practical realization of theoretical and professional concepts. Subject-specific competences are listed for each curriculum separately. The main subject-specific competencies developed by the present study programme, which are an upgrade of the above, can be summarized in the following points: • ability to design and construct mechatronic systems, assemblies, devices, machines, and plants, • use and development of computer-aided mechanical engineering and electrical design as well as modern programming languages and web systems for teleoperation of mechatronic systems, • use and development of procedures and tools for modelling, optimization, and simulation of mechatronic systems, • ability to design, develop and use modern mechatronic production technologies and concepts, • ability to manage existing mechatronic production processes and technologies, analyse, assess, and evaluate and update them, • ability to organize the planning and management of the mechatronic production process, • ability to ensure the appropriate quality of products by performing appropriate measurements and quality control, • ability to provide measures for the smooth operation, maintenance and environmental integrity of products throughout their lifetime, • ability of interdisciplinary understanding of activities in production systems, • ability to constantly develop skills and abilities in the application of knowledge in a certain professional field, • knowledge and understanding of the history of mechatronics development and its disciplines, • study and deepening of a professional foreign language, spoken all around the world, which will enable the students to communicate with foreign experts as well as to search in the world treasury of knowledge.

    Access requirements

    In the university study programme Mechatronics can enrol those who: a) have passed the Matura examination, b) have passed a Vocational Matura examination from any kind of high school programme and an examination in one of the Matura examination subjects; the selected subject cannot be a subject the student has already passed at the Vocational Matura examination, c) have completed any kind of high school programme of four years duration before 1st June 1995.

    Selection criteria in the event of limited enrolment

    If decision about limiting the number of student entries is accepted, than the candidates from points a) will be selected considering : achieved average grade of study at 1st level study programmes. - general grade of general examination 60% points (ponder 0,6) - general grade in 3. and 4. year 40% points (ponder 0,4) Candidates from point b) will be selected considering: - general grade of professional leaving examination 40% points (ponder 0,4) - general grade in 3. and 4. year 40% points (ponder 0,4) - grade from the additional exam: 20% points (ponder 0,2) Candidates from point c) will be selected considering: - general grade of final examination 60% points (ponder 0,6) - general grade in 3. and 4. year 40% points (ponder 0,4)

    Transfer criteria between study programmes

    Candidates are enrolled according to the Criteria for Transitions between Study Programmes: • in the second or higher study year of the university study programme of the 1st level of Mechatronics, when it comes to the termination of education according to the first study programme in the field of Mechatronics (0788); Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering and Metalwork (0715); Economic Engineering-Mechanical Engineering (0788); Electrical Engineering and Energy (0713); Economic Engineering-Electrical Engineering (0788); Electronics and Automation (0714), Motor vehicles, ships and aircrafts (0716) and continuing studies under this study programme of the same level. Transition is possible if the candidate meets the following conditions: • meets the conditions for enrolment in the first study year of the university study programme of the 1st level of Mechatronics, • transfers from the study programme which at the end of the study ensures the acquisition of comparable competencies or learning outcomes, • upon transfer, at least half of the obligations under the European Credit Transfer System (hereinafter: ECTS) from the first study programme, which refer to the compulsory subjects of the second study programme, are recognized. Transitions between 1st level higher education study programmes. The transition from one study programme to another study programme is decided by the Commission for Study Affairs of FS or FERI. In accordance with the Rules on the Recognition of Knowledge and Skills in the Study Programmes of the University of Maribor, the candidate must submit to the Faculty: • application for recognition of knowledge and skills at the University of Maribor, • certificate of completed study obligations (exams) with obtained grades and the number of credit points, • validated curricula according to which knowledge has been acquired, • proof of payment of the procedure. If at least as many ECTS credits are recognized in the recognition process at the time of transfer that the conditions for enrolment in the senior year of the university study programme of the 1st level of Mechatronics will be met, the candidate is granted enrolment in the second or higher study year of the said study programme. The students are assigned the missing obligations they must complete if they want to graduate in the new study programme. The transition from post-secondary study programmes to the 1st level Mechatronics university study programme is not possible.

    Criteria for recognition of knowledge and skills, gained before the enrolment in the study programme

    The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering recognises the acquired knowledge, qualifications or abilities on the basis of the Rules on the Recognition of Knowledge and Skills in the Study Programmes of the University of Maribor, which regulates the procedures for identifying, verifying and recognising knowledge and the criteria for recognising knowledge acquired through formal and non-formal learning before enrolment and during the studies at the University of Maribor. The faculty recognises the knowledge and skills of the candidates, gained before enrolment, if, in terms of scope, their content and complexity fully or partially correspond to the general or subject-specific competencies determined by the study programme in which the candidates wish to enrol or are enrolled. The basis for the recognition of knowledge and skills are the certificates or other documents: - publicly valid documents (certificates, diplomas), - certificates of completed work of the study programme or completed obligations in the study programme, - certificates of education and training providers on successful completion of education/training, certificates and other documents, - products, services, projects, publications and other author's works of candidates, - evidence of registered patents, - relevant references on practical training and work experience, - knowledge acquired through self-education and informal learning and other evidence/knowledge assessed by the Commission for Academic Affairs UM FERI or Commission for Academic Affairs UM FS.

    Criteria for completing the study

    A student who completes all the obligations prescribed by the study programme and thus collects at least 180 ECTS credits completes his/her studies.
