Assesment criteria

Regulations and syllabi provide for each study unit forms of evaluation and assessment. Instantaneous methods of knowledge evaluation and assessment are encouraged, enabling students to control their own study development directly.

Main study programme objectives

Fundamental goals of the 1st degree vocational college study Civil Engineering are: - The mandatory part of the programme provides general practically-oriented education, whereas profound special knowledge is included in the elective modules and courses accounting for 20 ECTS or 11.1% of all student obligations. Such a programme provides better overview in construction problems, more effective cooperation in solving complex construction problems, better employment flexibility and easier acquiring of various specific knowledge. Therefore, such programme is more suitable for a relative small industry like the one in Slovenia than a more specific programme where the efficient employment is possible only in a specific discipline. - The programme focuses into practical and innovative problem solving where the knowledge acquiring comes from the analysis of concrete practical problems, followed by abstraction. - The programme helps students to develop critical and innovative thinking and qualify them for correct and modern solving of all simple and general practical problems in construction. - The graduates will be able to understand which duties they can perform independently and correctly. Also, they will be able to formulate the duties that are beyond their knowledge and surpass them to competent experts. - The focus is on skill development in order to understand and solve practical problems by taking into account valid Slovene and European norms and regulations in construction. - The study programme offers enough fundamental general theoretical knowledge, general and specific professional knowledge and practical projects, so that the graduates can connect specific knowledge and specialities from construction. - The elective modules and elective courses provide proficiency in specific professional knowledge. - The work on integral practical projects during the studies and practical work in industry help students to understand practical problems and their solutions and qualify them for the independent solution. - Education of widely proficient graduates who will independently solve practical engineering problems and connect activities of experts from different fields in order to perform optimal realization of practical duties in construction or related to construction. - Contents of expected knowledge in construction meet the requirements of construction industry in Slovenia, European Union and worldwide. - Adjustment of the study programme to Bologna declaration which indirectly enables international comparison and transferability. - Education of an expert in civil engineering according to European guidelines and international compatibility of the programme, who can be employed after the finished study also in Europe. - On 24 December 2014 FEANI (FEANI EMC) federation affirmed 1st degree vocational college study Civil Engineering which is now recorded in so called FEANI INDEX programme. Students of engineering programmes recorded in FEANI INDEX can gain the title EUR-ING according to the FEANI rules, they can apply for European Engineering card (http://www.engineering-card.si) at SIZ (NC SI FEANI) which is a European professional identification document for engineers. - Even though the programme assures the proper education in civil engineering, the one of the goals is to qualify and motivate the graduate for further studies.

General competences of graduates, gained at a study programme

In terms of general competences, students of the 1st degree vocational college study Civil Engineering gain: - Ability to design and execute construction works in suitable quality and value based on acquired basic knowledge in fundamental natural sciences, informatics, geodesy, engineering ethics, fundamental construction disciplines, and the ability to provide an independent engineering assessment based on scientific and professional analysis and synthesis. - Ability to predict solutions and consequences. - Proficiency in basics of research methods, procedures and processes, development of critical and self-critical evaluation. - Ability to communicate in national and international environment. - Autonomy in professional work - Ability for ethic reflexion and commitment to professional ethics. - Ability to use their knowledge in practice. - Ability and sense for solving practical problems. - Cooperativity and team work ability both in the national and international environment. - Ability for creative work in a construction project team and a contractor team. - Ability to connect the basis of engineering economics and problems of environmental protection with the design of structures and construction products. - Creativity and innovation as a result of interdisciplinarity of the study.

Subject specific competences of graduates, gained on a study programme

In terms of course-specific competences, students of the 1st degree professionally oriented study programme Civil Engineering gain: - Knowledge in design, organization and management of construction works and construction production, construction informatics, ecology, urban planning and environmental policy. - Understanding of civil engineering in terms of historical development. - Ability to communicate in an organization as well as with partners and clients (courses Architecture, Construction economics, Management of construction work, …) - Ability to solve individual (less demanding) work problems by using their expert knowledge and applying scientific methods and procedures. - Qualification for individual and creative execution of general professional duties in construction, ability to take on more demanding duties in a team and to assist the management in existing technological procedures of the duties described in the first paragraph. - The modernization of the study programmes is designed so that the proposed 1st degree professionally oriented study programme Civil Engineering does not assure all design and implementation competences, however, they are qualified to gain them with additional studies. Therefore, graduates of the proposed programme are not capable of optimal and individual management of demanding construction projects, but they can cooperate in the project team by performing certain professional duties. The graduates can dimension construction elements and design whole objects according to definition of ZGO-I for such profile and education degree, however, they can reach increased independency and legal responsibility of demanding work by suitable practice as defined by ZGO-I.

Access requirements

The enrolment in higher professional degree study programme of Civil Engineering is possible if the student has passed the secondary school leaving examination in any program, vocational matura examination or matura examination.

Selection criteria in the event of limited enrolment

If only a limited number of students are admitted, the candidates are selected according to: - general performance in a secondary school leaving examination, vocational matura or matura examination 60 % points, - general performance in the 3rd and 4th year of the secondary school 40 % points.

Transfer criteria between study programmes

According to Criteria for transferring between study programmes, candidates can enrol into: • the second or third year of the 1st degree professionally oriented study programme Civil Engineering, if they terminate the education in their first study programme and they proceed study within the same programme of the same degree or enrol into a new study programme of the same degree. They can transfer from the field of civil engineering, architecture, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering and from other engineering, natural sciences and mathematical disciplines. • The enrolment of the higher vocational graduates into the second year of the 1st degree professionally oriented study programme Civil Engineering is possible from the field of civil engineering and other field-related disciplines.
