    Text about acceptance

    The Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Architecture and Faculty for Economics and Bussines are members of the University of Maribor, which is a public university. Study programme INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING was accredited on 25. 2. 2010. The University of Maribor was externaly evaluated by the Slovenian Quality Assurance Agency (SQAA) in 2022 (NAKVIS). SQAA is a member of ENQA and registrated in EQAR.

    Advancement criteria of a study programme

    Students proceed to the year 2 if they collect at least 40 ECTS with the passed exams from the year 1 and with all obligations from the course Statistics with Research Methods.

    Criteria for completing separate parts of a study programme

    The study programme does not include individual parts.

    Assesment criteria

    Regulations and syllabi provide the forms of assessment methods for each course unit. Instantaneous methods of knowledge evaluation and assessment are encouraged, which enables students to control their own study development directly.

    Main study programme objectives

    •The study programme upgrades knowledge from basic natural science and civil engineering courses as well as economics and business. •It educates students to understand the connection between engineering problems and business reality in order to use it in practice. •It offers profound interdisciplinary knowledge for experts who will be able to connect theory and practice in order to solve complex engineering problems and interconnect different sub-disciplines of civil engineering with challenges in economics and business. •It educates top experts in industrial engineering for Slovenian economy in accordance with European guidelines and international comparability of the programme which enables graduates perspective and competiveness in Slovenian and European labour market. • Finally, the goal of the programmes is to bring the innovativeness of students and later graduates as future employees in construction companies to a higher level which is possible only with the combination of knowledge from both perspectives.

    General competences of graduates, gained at a study programme

    In the course of the study, the students of the 2nd degree post-graduate Master Programme Industrial Engineering will gain suitable general competences to be able to solve highly demanding expert challenges in accordance with high standards of merits. General competences are included in the core knowledge of the Master programme or its track. Students will be able to gain profound knowledge in wide expert fields, they will be trained to find new sources of knowledge in their discipline and scientific field, to use a scientific-research method for solving problems and in new or changed circumstances, to take responsibility in management of demanding working processes and systems. The listed qualities will be gained during the study process which is designed to include expert and scientific development with the help of projects in the work environment, which are basic, applicative and developmental oriented. In addition, the study process will foster other skills, values, beliefs and a positive self-esteem which essentially contribute to quality knowledge, to efficient source usage, to successful communication skills and to the success in demanding activities. Graduates of the second degree postgraduate Master study programme Industrial Engineering will understand research methods, procedures and processes from the wide field of industrial engineering in their track. They will design and construct demanding products, systems and technology with their expert critical state, self-critical evaluation and responsibility, by taking into account professional excellence, social utility, ethical responsibility, professional ethics liability and measures for environmental integrity of their products. Additionally, they will use system concepts and principles of universality. At the same time, they will be able to provide an independent engineering evaluation based on the scientific analysis and synthesis. A special focus will be on simultaneous comprehension and solving engineering-organizational problems which is the most distinctive feature of this interdisciplinary study. Students will be able to connect theory and practice efficiently, also in terms of project works. Wide, interdisciplinary-oriented study contents will enable full swing of their creative and innovative potentials. They will be able to analyse problems, eliminate unimportant impacts, provide a synthesis, anticipate possible solutions, select the best solution in the given moment and evaluate related consequences. They will work independently and will develop communication and teamwork skills in national and international environment. Second degree graduates should deepen their knowledge and understanding of professional problems in engineering, economics and business science, therefore, individual study courses are designed on the needs of industry and include the scope of required knowledge and study contents.

    Subject specific competences of graduates, gained on a study programme

    In terms of course-specific competences, students of the Postgraduate Master study programme Industrial Engineering – track Civil Engineering, will gain: - ability to use and deepen specialised knowledge in planning, design, construction and maintenance of construction objects (structures and infrastructure objects), management of construction works and construction production, construction informatics, sustainable construction, urban planning and environmental policy, - ability to understand physical principles and their role in engineering problems, - ability to understand operation of water supply systems and waste water treatment, - understanding of philosophy of geotechnical design and methods of ensuring geostatic safety in supporting constructions, - ability to solve optimisation problems in operative construction, - ability to manage constructional projects and make decision about investments and property valuation, - qualification to use computer tools in their professional field, - qualification to use methods and techniques to manage demanding construction projects in terms of suitable quality, time-management and economic efficiency, - understanding to use statistical methods in scientific-research work, - understanding of modern theoretical concepts of business finances and ability to evaluate their employability in practice, - ability to manage projects and project programmes in business environment, - ability to strategic manage business and production systems, - integrational knowledge from construction economy and management which designs the image of a graduate.

    Access requirements

    Candidates who completed the following may apply for the Civil Engineering option of the 2nd-cycle (master’s) study programme in Industrial Engineering: 1. A 1st-cycle (bachelor’s) study programme in one of the following fields: industrial engineering - civil engineering option (0788), building and civil engineering encompassing the entire field (0732), mechanics (0715), industrial engineering – mechanical engineering option (0788), or architecture (0731). 2. A 1st-cycle (bachelor’s) study programme in one of the following fields: transport services (traffic) (1041), engineering and engineering trades (traffic engineering) (0788), industrial engineering – electrical engineering option (0788), environmental sciences (0521), Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) not further defined (0610), economics (0311, 0413, 0388, 0488), or town planning (0731). Prior to enrolment, candidates shall fulfil the following study obligations corresponding to between 10 and 60 ECTS credits under the 1st-cycle (bachelor’s) study programme, a supplementary study programme, or by taking bridging exams: the Structural Mechanics, Geotechnics, Hydraulic Engineering, Engineering Structures, Construction Management, and Construction Materials and Economics courses. 3. An undergraduate professional study programme adopted prior to 11 June 2004 in the following field: building and civil engineering encompassing the entire field (0732). 4. An undergraduate professional study programme adopted prior to 11 June 2004 in one of the following fields: transport services (traffic) (1041), engineering and engineering trades (traffic engineering) (0788), architecture (0731), mechanics (0715), or town planning (0731). Prior to enrolment, candidates shall fulfil the following study obligations corresponding to between 10 and 60 ECTS credits under the 1st-cycle (bachelor’s) study programme, a supplementary study programme, or by taking bridging exams: the Structural Mechanics, Geotechnics, Hydraulic Engineering, Engineering Structures, Construction Management, and Construction Materials and Economics courses. 5. An undergraduate academic study programme adopted prior to 11 June 2004 in one of the following fields: industrial engineering - civil engineering option (0788) or building and civil engineering encompassing the entire field (0732). Candidates are typically awarded 60 ECTS credits and may enrol in the second year of study provided they satisfy the transfer criteria laid down in the accredited study programme. 6. An undergraduate academic study programme adopted prior to 11 June 2004 in one of the following fields: transport services (traffic) (1041), architecture (0731), mechanics (0715), or town planning (0731). Candidates are awarded up to 40 ECTS credits and may enrol in the corresponding year of study. 7. A specialisation following an undergraduate professional study programme adopted prior to 11 June 2004 in the following field: or building and civil engineering encompassing the entire field (0732). Candidates are typically awarded 60 ECTS credits and may enrol in the second year of study provided they satisfy the transfer criteria laid down in the accredited study programme. 8. A specialisation following an undergraduate professional study programme adopted prior to 11 June 2004 in one of the following fields: transport services (traffic) (1041), architecture (0731), mechanics (0715), or town planning (0731). Candidates are awarded up to 40 ECTS credits and may enrol in the corresponding year of study.

    Selection criteria in the event of limited enrolment

    If the number of applications exceeds the number of available enrolment places, candidates shall be ranked according to: – grade point average (100%).

    Transfer criteria between study programmes

    Candidates may transfer between study programmes in accordance with the Higher Education Act, Criteria for Transferring Between Study Programmes and other rules. In accordance with the Criteria for Transferring Between Study Programmes, candidates may enrol: - in the second year of the 2nd-cycle (master’s) study programme in Industrial Engineering (GING) – the Civil Engineering option if they have ceased their studies in the previous study programme and will continue them under a new study programme at the same level, or if a higher education graduate is enrolling in a new study programme at the same level. Candidates may transfer from study programmes in the field of building and civil engineering. Candidates may transfer to the study programme provided they fulfil the following criteria: - criteria for enrolment in the first year of the 2nd-cycle study programme in Industrial Engineering (GING) – the Civil Engineering option; - they are transferring from a study programme leading to the acquisition of comparable competences or learning outcomes; - at least half of the study obligations evaluated according to the ECTS credit system of the previous study programme relating to compulsory courses of the new study programme are recognised. The transfer shall be addressed by a competent senate committee of the faculty where the candidate intends to continue his studies. In accordance with the Rules on the Recognition of Knowledge and Skills in Study Programmes of the University of Maribor, the candidate shall submit to the faculty: - an application for the recognition of knowledge and skills at the University of Maribor; - proof of fulfilled study obligations (exams) including grades and ECTS credits; - validated course syllabi according to which knowledge was acquired; - a receipt of payment for the recognition procedure. When transferring from one study programme to another, fulfilled study obligations that may be recognized fully or partially are identified, taking into account the content, extent, and level of complexity of the new study programme, and study obligations required for completion of the new study programme are laid down.

    Criteria for recognition of knowledge and skills, gained before the enrolment in the study programme

    Measures for the recognition of knowledge and skills are regulated by the Rules on the recognition of knowledge and skills in study programmes of the University of Maribor. Evaluation of the gained knowledge and skills must base on educational competencies of the study programme.

    Criteria for completing the study

    The study is completed when all obligations, prescribed by the study programme are finished and 120 ECTS are collected.

    INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING - MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

    Text about acceptance

    The study program was confirmed at the University of Maribor Senate meeting on the 17th of November 2009 and was accepted by the Council for Higher Education of Republic of Slovenia on the 25th of February 2010. The study program was confirmed again at the University of Maribor Senate meeting on the 27th of September 2016 and was accepted by The Slovenian Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education on the 19th of October 2017.

    Advancement criteria of a study programme

    Advancement according to the study programme is possible if the student fulfils certain obligations set out in the study programme and the Statute of the University of Maribor. Conditions for transition to the 2nd study year: A student advances to the 2nd study year if, by completing the study obligations of the 1st study year, he/she collects at least 47 ECTS credit points and has passed the exams in the following study subjects: - Methods of Experimental Work (7 ECTS), - Modern Engineering Materials (6 ECTS), - Production Systems (5 ECTS), - Statistics with Research Methods (6 ECTS). A student who does not fulfil all the obligations for advancement may exceptionally be granted enrolment in the 2nd study year, at his/her own request, by the Commission for Study Affairs of the Senate of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, in accordance with the provisions of the Statute of the University of Maribor. Students who do not fulfil all the obligations for advancement may, at their request, be granted enrolment in the 2nd study year by the Commission for Study Affairs of the University Member, if they have fulfilled more than half of the 1st year study obligations (more than 30 ECTS) and completed the above study subjects, but only if they were unable to fulfil the obligations for justified reasons which are determined in the Statute of the University of Maribor, and if it is expected that they will fulfil the obligations. Repetition of the study year: A student who has not fulfilled all the obligations for transition to a higher study year may be granted a repetition of the year by the Commission for Study Affairs of the University Member in accordance with the provisions of the Statute of the University of Maribor.

    Criteria for completing separate parts of a study programme

    The study programme is comprehensive and does not provide for the completion of individual parts of the programme.

    Study advancement options

    Postgraduate study of 3. level (Ph.D.) study programmes at Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of University of Maribor or at other higher-education institutions. The candidates can enrol into a postgraduate study of 3. level postgraduate programs in accordance with the conditions of the institution that offers the postgraduate study program.

    Employment possibilities

    Master study programme Industrial Engineering, study field Mechanical Engineering, offers to its graduates an excellent basis for employment in different areas. Students simultaneously acquire technical, business and interdisciplinary knowledge that enables also obtaining wide spectrum of qualitative competences that enable them to be flexible in the labour market, to be competitive and consequently have great employment possibilities. The graduate will be an expert with business and technical knowledge to manage business and production processes in companies, manage different areas of company development, manage projects, manages sales and marketing in production companies and to be involved in other strategically important areas in the company. Besides their basic engineering background students will possess wide spectrum of knowledge to find employment in industry (not just in production companies from mechanical engineering) or public-sector organisations.

    Assesment criteria

    Examination and assessment of students’ learning outcomes is carried out in accordance with the criteria and methods defined in the Rules on Examination and Assessment of Knowledge at the University of Maribor, available at https://www.um.si/univerza/dokumentni-center/akti/Strani/studij-na-um.aspx. Criteria and methods of assessing the knowledge within an individual study subject are part of the SUBJECT-SPECIFICation and are publicly available on the website https://aips.um.si/PredmetiBP5/main.asp. For all subjects in all study programmes of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, knowledge assessment is regulated by a single "Assessment Scale" which is available at https://www.fs.um.si/studij/informacije-o-studiju/izpitni-sistem/. Methods of ongoing assessment and evaluation of knowledge are encouraged, thus enabling students to monitor their own progress in their studies.

    Main study programme objectives

    The basic goals of the Industrial Engineering study programme at the second level of higher education are: - implement a study programme that upgrades knowledge in the field of construction or mechanical engineering (depending on the direction of the study programme) and at the same time provides and upgrades economic and business knowledge; - implement an interdisciplinary master's study programme that will train students to understand the connection between engineering (technical, technological) problems and business reality; - educate the character of a top expert in the field of economic engineering in accordance with European guidelines and, with the international comparability of the programme, to enable the graduate the opportunity to be employed on the European labour market; - train an expert who – with a broad general knowledge of basic knowledge in the field of construction or mechanical engineering – will be additionally qualified to solve specific engineering problems with innovative interconnection of various fields within the relevant technical profession and in connection with economic and business challenges; - provide the Slovenian economy with a broadly qualified expert who will enable its perspective and competitiveness on the European market. We also want to further train the existing management staff in various companies with interdisciplinary knowledge in the technical and economic fields, so that they will be able to solve complex problems from both perspectives (technical solution and application on the market); - raise the level of innovation of students and existing staff in engineering and production companies, which is possible only with a combination of the above skills. The stated goals of the study programme are the starting point for checking the learning outcomes of students both within individual study subject contents and in the final diploma theses. Based on these goals, students within the 2nd level study programme will gain such theoretical knowledge and its application in practice that they will achieve both general and subject-specific competencies. The acquired knowledge will be comparable to the knowledge acquired in comparable study programmes of related institutions in Europe.

    General competences of graduates, gained at a study programme

    Students of the postgraduate master's programme of the second level of Industrial Engineering will acquire appropriate general competencies during their studies, so that they will be able to solve very demanding professional problems in accordance with the high standards of work performance demanded from such educated professionals. General competencies will be acquired from the core knowledge of the master's study programme or field. We will enable students to acquire in-depth knowledge in broader professional fields, while training them to find new sources of knowledge in professional and scientific fields, to use scientific research methods in a wider range of problems and in new or changed circumstances, and to take responsibility for leading very demanding work processes and systems. These qualities will be acquired by students during the study process which will be designed in such a way that it will intensively include professional and scientific maturation through project task solving in the work environment, which will be fundamental, application- or development-oriented. In addition, students will acquire other skills, abilities, values, beliefs, and positive self-image during the study process which, in addition to quality knowledge, significantly contribute to efficient use of resources and successful communication skills and contribute a significant share to performance in very demanding tasks. Graduates of the postgraduate master's study programme of the second level of Industrial Engineering will master research methods, procedures and processes in the broader field of economic engineering in the relevant field and with professional criticism, self-critical judgment and responsibility will be able to design, plan, and construct demanding products, systems, technologies, taking into account professional excellence, social usefulness, ethical responsibility, commitment to professional ethics and criteria for the environmental integrity of their creations. In doing so, they will use systemic concepts and principles of universality. At the same time, they will be able to perform independent technical assessment based on scientific analysis and synthesis. Special emphasis will be placed on the simultaneous perception and solution of technical-organizational problems, which is the most important feature of this interdisciplinary study. Students will be able to effectively connect theory and practice, including through project assignments. The broad, interdisciplinary orientation of the study contents will enable the full expansion of their creative and innovative potentials. They will be able to analyse problems, eliminate insignificant influences, make a synthesis, anticipate possible solutions, choose the best decision at a given moment and assess the consequences associated with it. They will be independent at their work, and at the same time they will develop communication skills and group work competencies in the domestic and international environment. At the second level of study, the graduate has to deepen his/her knowledge and understanding of professional issues in the technical field and in the field of economics and business sciences, especially within individual study orientations which are formed on the basis of business needs, and a set of necessary knowledge and study contents.

    Subject specific competences of graduates, gained on a study programme

    Subject-specific competences are listed for each curriculum separately. The main competencies developed by the postgraduate master's study programme of the second level of Industrial Engineering - Mechanical Engineering can be summarized in the following points: - ability to master and deepen knowledge in selected professional fields (e.g., design of technical systems, development engineering, environmental engineering, advanced processing technologies and systems, management of production technologies) and interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, - ability to design, evaluate and manufacture technologically demanding products and systems that can be marketed on world markets, - ability to design, develop and use modern production technologies, production automation and new production concepts, - understanding the effects of environmental pollution and introducing primary and secondary measures to reduce them, - ability to systematically understand production systems and processes, to take advantage of newer production philosophies, - ability to independently plan and design production systems in practice, - ability to apply standards and legislation in solving engineering problems, - ability of students to solve problems in the field of selection and characterization of materials, - use of computer tools in the areas of targeted product development, - knowledge of designing and building more complex integrated machining systems, - understanding the manner in which the contractual obligation arises and the importance of its proper fulfilment on the market, - understanding and application of statistical methods in scientific research, - understanding of modern theoretical concepts of business finance and the ability to assess their applicability in practice, - ability to manage projects and project programmes in business environments, - ability to strategically manage business and production systems.

Candidates may transfer to the study programme provided they fulfil the following criteria: - criteria for enrolment in the first year of the 2nd-cycle study programme in Industrial Engineering (GING) – the Mechanical Engineering option; - they are transferring from a study programme leading to the acquisition of comparable competences or learning outcomes; - at least half of the study obligations evaluated according to the ECTS credit system of the previous study programme relating to compulsory courses of the new study programme are recognised. The transfer shall be addressed by the Committee for Academic Affairs of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. In accordance with the Rules on the Recognition of Knowledge and Skills in Study Programmes of the University of Maribor, the candidate shall submit to the faculty: - an application for the recognition of knowledge and skills at the University of Maribor; - proof of fulfilled study obligations (exams) including grades and ECTS credits; - validated course syllabi according to which knowledge was acquired; - a receipt of payment for the recognition procedure. If under the recognition procedure enough fulfilled study obligations is recognized that the candidate meets the criteria for enrolment in the second year of the 2nd-cycle (master’s) study programme in Industrial Engineering (GING) – the Mechanical Engineering option, enrolment in the second year is approved and study obligations required for completion of the new study programme are laid down. If the number of applications exceeds the number of available enrolment places, candidates shall be ranked according to grade point average.

    Criteria for recognition of knowledge and skills, gained before the enrolment in the study programme

    Criteria for recognition of knowledge and skills are regulated by the Rules on Recognition of Knowledge and Skills in Study Programmes of the University of Maribor which regulate the procedures for identifying, verifying, and recognizing knowledge and criteria for recognizing knowledge and skills acquired by candidates through formal and non-formal learning prior to enrolment and while studying at the University of Maribor. The basic criterion for recognition is the comparability of knowledge acquired elsewhere with learning units, skills and competences. Examination, in terms of content and complexity, whether they fully or partially correspond to the general and/or subject-specific competencies determined by the study programme.

    Criteria for completing the study

    A student who completes all the obligations prescribed by the study programme and thus collects at least 120 ECTS credits completes his/her studies.
