Text about acceptance

The 1st level university study program of Classroom Teaching was approved at the 10th extraordinary session of the Senate of the Faculty of Education, on 15 October 2007, at the 11th session of the Senate of the University of Maribor, on 15 April 2008 and at the 10th session of the Senate for Accreditation at the Council of the Republic of Slovenia for Higher Education on 23 October 2008. On 12 January the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of Slovenia issued decision no. 60392-34/2008 on the entry of this study program in the register of higher education institutions under serial number 17.

Advancement criteria of a study programme

Advancing from one year to another is possible if a student fulfils certain obligations defined by the study program and the Statute of the University of Maribor. Conditions for advancing to the 2nd year A student advances to the 2nd year if they complete study obligations in the amount of at least 48 ECTS, of which they must complete Practical Training I, Practical Training II and Pedagogy. Conditions for advancing to the 3rd year A student advances to the 3rd year if they pass all exams from the 1st year and collect at least 52 ECTS from the 2nd year, of which they must pass Practical Training III, Didactics, Selected Chapters from Sports, Vocal-Instrumental Lessons I, Vocal- Instrumental lessons II, Didactic Practicum in Science and Technology and Basic Art Pedagogical Contents. Conditions for advancing to the 4th year A student advances to the 4th year if they pass all exams from the 1st and 2nd year and collect at least 48 ECTS from the 3rd year, of which they must pass Practical Training IV, Music Pedagogical Practicum, Didactics of Science and Technology I, Didactics of Music of Art I, Didactics of Fine Arts I and Didactics of Sport I. A student may advance to a higher year, conditionally advance or repeat the year on the basis of the provisions of the Statute of the University of Maribor.

Study advancement options

After completing the first level four-year study program at the 1st level university study program, it is possible to continue the study at the second level study program offered by the Faculty of Education of the University of Maribor or another University in accordance with its study programs.

Employment possibilities

Completing studies in the 1st level university study program of Classroom Teaching does not give the graduate competencies for independent work in a classroom. A graduate obtains relevant competencies only after completing the second Bologna level of studies. With a first level diploma, a graduate can be employed in the primary school education program as a second teacher in the first grade, provided that the conditions of the Organization and Financing of Education Act and the Rules on Teacher Education and Other Professionals are met. The diploma and the deepening of knowledge in the chosen field, made possible by elective courses, will enable employment and independent work in other social activities and liberal professions.

Main study programme objectives

The fundamental objective of the program is to educate a broad-minded graduate who will be equipped with all the necessary general and special knowledge, skills and abilities to be able to meet the requirements of modern primary education at the classroom level. The specific objectives of the program are to educate graduates who: • knows, understands and uses basic and special knowledge in the field of professions, which we teach at the classroom level of education • has the knowledge and skills necessary for further study at higher levels of study. • is acquainted with pedagogical, psychological, didactic and special didactic principles and principles in teaching in the first two levels; • has a critical attitude towards the educational reality, recognizing and successfully resolving professional, ethical and social issues and dilemmas. • has knowledge and skills for finding and using new sources of knowledge, for lifelong development and upgrading of communicative and other professional competencies, • is creative in solving problems in various complex and unpredictable situations brought about by the educational process, • who is able to substantiate their pedagogical and didactic decisions and procedures with rational, professional and research-based arguments.

General competences of graduates, gained at a study programme

During their studies in the 1st level undergraduate study program of Classroom Teaching, students will acquire the following general competencies: - ability to analyse, synthesize and predict solutions and consequences, - mastery of research methods, procedures and processes, - ability to apply knowledge in practice, - development of critical and self-critical judgment, - autonomy in professional work, - communication skills, in particular communication in an international environment, - ethical reflection and commitment to professional ethics, - cooperation, group work (also in an international environment), - initiative/ambition, the value of continuous personal and professional advancement; - sensitivity (awareness) to the natural and social environment, national culture, heritage, identity, multiculturalism and non-discrimination, - ability to manage time, plan independently, - sensitivity/openness to people and social situations, - understanding of individual valuesand value systems.

Subject specific competences of graduates, gained on a study programme

During their studies in the 1st level undergraduate study program of Classroom Teaching, students will acquire the following subject-specific competencies: - knowledge and understanding of justification (justification) and history (development) of educational systems, - ability to solve concrete pedagogical problems using scientific methods and procedures, - coherent mastery of basic knowledge, ability to integrate knowledge from different fields and applications, - ability to place new information and interpretations in the context of education, - understanding the general structure of education and connections between its subdisciplines (curricular theories, special pedagogical knowledge ...), - understanding and application of methods of critical analysis and development of theories and their use in solving concrete pedagogical problems, - development of skills in the use of knowledge in the field of education, - use of information and communication technology and systems in the field of education, - knowledge and understanding of developmental characteristics, differences and needs of students in the first two educational levels of primary school and identification of learning abilities and problems, holistic understanding of the child, - organizational and managerial skills in education; - knowledge of social systems, especially processes in education; - knowledge of institutional frameworks (requirements, legislation, documentation needs, legal aspects of educational work), - aesthetic sensitivity and ability to work actively and creatively in artistic fields; - knowledge and understanding of didactic characteristics of teaching in the first two educational levels of primary school in the field of Slovene language, mathematics, science, technology, social sciences, sports education, art education, music education and ability of interdisciplinary connections, - assistance in the pedagogical guidance of an individual, department and/or group; - adapting educational approaches to the individual, social, linguistic and cultural diversity of students, - participation in extended primary school programs (e.g. extended stays, clubs, school networks ...), - creating a stimulating learning atmosphere, interpersonal relationships and effective resolution of disciplinary problems.

Access requirements

Anyone who has passed the Matura exam or completed any four-year high school program before 1 June 1995 can enrol in the 1st level university study program of Classroom Teaching.

Selection criteria in the event of limited enrolment

If a decision is taken to restrict enrolment, candidates will be selected based on: - general success in the general matura or final exam: 60% of points, - overall success in 3rd and 4th year: 40% of points.

Transfer criteria between study programmes

Transitions between study programs are possible in accordance with the Higher Education Act, Criteria for transitions between study programs and other regulations. Transition between study programs means termination of education in the first study program and then continuation of studies in the second study program. Transitions are possible between study programs of the same level and post-secondary study programs and study programs of the first level, which ensure the acquisition of comparable competencies upon completion of studies and between which at least half of the obligations under the European Transmission Credit System (hereinafter: ECTS) can be recognized from the first study program, which refers to the compulsory subjects of the second study program. Applications for transition of the student i.e. the graduate, who must meet conditions for enrolment in the proposed study program, are considered by the Commission for Academic Affairs of PEF UM on the proposal of the Department of Classroom Teaching. Depending on the scope of recognized obligations from the first study program in the Republic of Slovenia or abroad, a student may enrol in the second or higher year of the 1st level university study program of Classroom Teaching. The following may be recognized in the transition: 1. comparable study obligations that a student has completed in the first study program; 2. informally obtained comparable knowledge, which a student can prove with relevant documents. A student may enrol in the senior year if at least as many credit points are recognized in the recognition process due to the transition, as are required for enrolment in the senior year of the 1st level university study program of Classroom Teaching. The missing obligations a student has to fulfil if they want to graduate in a new study program are determined. It is possible to transition to the 1st level university study program of Classroom Teaching from: 1. 1st level university study programs in the fields of classroom teaching and relevant foreign university study programs, which provide comparable competencies and at least half of the study obligations (ECTS credits) from the first study program and which meet the conditions for enrolment in this study program may be recognized as mandatory subjects in this program. The Commission for Academic Affairs of the Faculty of Education UM, at the proposal of the Department of Classroom Teaching, considers applications for enrolment in the relevant year and determines missing obligations that must be met if a student wants to graduate in the new program.

Criteria for recognition of knowledge and skills, gained before the enrolment in the study programme

In the process of education at the 1st level, students can have knowledge and skills recognized, which were acquired before enrolment in various forms of formal education, which a student must prove with certificates and other documents. In the recognition process, the assessment of acquired knowledge and skills must be based on the educational competencies of the study program. Proven and well-documented competencies are recognized to candidates regardless of where and how they were obtained. The process of determining, verifying and recognizing knowledge and skills includes submitting an application, supplementing the application, examining the application at the competent authority, issuing a decision and the procedure for appealing against the issued decision. If, on the basis of the evidence provided, the competent authority determines that the knowledge and skills in content, scope and complexity fully or partially correspond to the competencies based on the educational objectives of the study program, it may recognize such knowledge. Criteria for completing the study

A student has completed their studies after completing all the obligations defined by the study program and thus collects at least 240 ECTS.
