Text about acceptance

The 1st level university study program of Art Pedagogy was approved at the 11th regular session of the Senate of the Faculty of Education, on 19 December 2007, at the 13th regular session of the Senate of the University of Maribor, on 17 June 2008 and at the 13th session of the Senate for Accreditation at the Council of the Republic of Slovenia for Higher Education on 15 December 2008. On 9 January 2009, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of Slovenia issued decision no. 60392-138 / 2008 on the entry of this study program into the register of higher education institutions under serial number 17.

Advancement criteria of a study programme

Conditions for advancing to the 2nd year A student advances to the 2nd year if they complete study obligations in the amount of at least 46 ECTS. Conditions for advancing to the 3rd year A student advances to the 3rd year if they pass all exams of the 1st year and collect at least 35 ECTS from the 2nd year, of which they must complete the observation practice. Conditions for advancing to the 4th year A student advances to the 4th year if they pass all exams from the 1st and 2nd year and collect at least 52 ECTS from the 3rd year, of which they must complete a condensed pedagogical practice at a primary school. Advancing to a higher year if conditions are not met If a student does not meet the conditions for advancing to a higher year, they must submit an application for advancing to the Commission for Academic Affairs in which they define their reasons for not fulfilling their obligations. On the basis of the data, the Commission for Academic Affairs will consider the case individually and decide on the advancement to a higher year.

Study advancement options

Graduates of this study program will be able to continue their studies in the study program of Art Pedagogy at the second level and gain a qualification for independent professional work in education.

Employment possibilities

The 1st level program will provide a wide range of employment opportunities for graduates in the field of education of their own and related professions. Thus, they will lead art workshops and courses, art pedagogical work within galleries, museums, various institutions, home care (children and adults) with special programs, hospital schools, various forms of self-employment. With the expanded offer of obtaining qualifications, graduates will be able to realize and excel in many other professions, which require the ability of visual perception and the ability to create art, knowledge of artistic skills and techniques, and through them achieved creative potential and authorial intention. This program is a first-level program, so it does not yet allow independent professional work in education. Graduates who will continue their studies in the study program of Art Pedagogy at the second level will gain a qualification for independent professional work in education.

Main study programme objectives

The aim of the program is to educate a broad-minded graduate who will be: • equipped with all the necessary general and special knowledge, skills and abilities to be able to meet the requirements of modern primary and secondary education as a teacher, • creative in solving problems in various complex and unpredictable situations within the educational process, • creative in solving problems in various complex and unpredictable situations brought by artistic and visual reality in terms of preparation and implementation of concepts i.e. concrete artistic materializations, • able to substantiate their pedagogical and didactic decisions and procedures with rational, professional and research-based arguments, • capable of cognitive and emotional deepening into the content dimensions of artistic reality and communication, • employable as a teacher of fine arts in primary or secondary school at the end of the 2nd level of Art Pedagogy.

General competences of graduates, gained at a study programme

As part of the 1st level undergraduate study program of Art Pedagogy, students will obtain the following general competencies: - synthetic analytical, creative thinking and problem-solving skills; - ethical reflection and commitment to professional ethics; - cooperation, teamwork; - development of communication abilities and skills; - use of knowledge in practice; - autonomy in professional work, (self)criticism, (self)reflection, (self)evaluation and striving for quality; - general knowledge, basic ability to communicate with experts from other professional and scientific fields; - initiative/ambition, the value of continuous personal and professional advancement; - sensitivity (awareness) to the natural and social environment, national culture, heritage, identity, multiculturalism and non-discrimination; - basic information literacy, use of information and communication technology; - organizational and managerial skills in education; - ability to manage time, to plan independently; - knowledge of social systems, especially processes in education; - sensitivity/openness to people and social situations; - knowledge of developmental laws, differences and needs of the individual; - basic competence for research in education; - knowledge of institutional work frameworks (requirements, legislation, documentation needs, legal aspects of educational work); - basic knowledge of educational concepts, their philosophical and historical foundations; - basic knowledge of the nature of art and artistic reality, knowledge of its philosophical and historical foundations; - understanding of individual values and value systems.

Subject specific competences of graduates, gained on a study programme

Within the 1st level university undergraduate study program of Art Pedagogy, students will obtain the following subject-specific competencies: - basic knowledge and understanding of developmental characteristics, differences and needs, holistic conception of the child; - basic knowledge of the content and methodology of the field; - ability to solve concrete minor work problems using basic scientific methods and procedures; - knowledge, understanding and application of curricular theories and content and didactic laws of teaching in primary school in the field of fine arts under the guidance of a mentor; - understanding and using basic special didactic knowledge to achieve curricular goals in primary school; - coherent mastery of basic knowledge and the ability to integrate knowledge from different fields and applications; - ability to use a wide range of teaching and learning strategies according to the needs of students with the help of a mentor; - development of basic skills in the application of knowledge in a specific professional field; - interdisciplinary integration of content under the guidance of a mentor; - pedagogical guidance of an individual, department and/or a group with the help of a mentor; - organizing active and independent learning; - ability to help in checking and assessing students’ knowledge and achievements, and co-creating feedback; - knowledge of relations between the educational institution and the social environment and co-creation of a comprehensive assessment of needs of the individual or the group, their strengths and weaknesses, taking into account environmental factors (physical, social, cultural); - knowledge of the procedures and principles of counselling work and planning and implementation (with the help) of intervention programs; - co-creating a stimulating learning atmosphere, interpersonal relationships and effective resolution of disciplinary problems; - use of basic information and communication technology and systems in a specific professional field, etc .; - cooperation with parents; - the ability to establish a partnership with other users or groups (parents, local community, counselling services, the economy, etc.); - participation in extended primary school programs (e.g extended stay, clubs, school networks, international cooperation ...); - communication with experts from various fields of education; - advocating for such changes in the system that ensure basic rights and needs of the user or a group.

Access requirements

Those who have passed the general matura or have completed any four-year secondary school program before 1 June 1995, who have completed any four-year secondary school program, who have passed the vocational matura in any secondary school program and the examination from one of the matura programs: Art Pedagogy or Art Theory. The chosen subject may not be a subject that a candidate has already passed at the vocational matura. In addition to the above, a candidate must have also successfully passed a test of artistic abilities.

Selection criteria in the event of limited enrolment

In case of restricted enrolment, candidates will be selected based on: - success in test of artistic ability (50%) - general success in matura, vocational matura or final exam (40%) - overall success in 3rd and 4th year (10%).

Transfer criteria between study programmes

Students of university study programs in art pedagogy and related study programs in the field of fine arts, art pedagogy, architecture and students of relevant foreign university study programs, which upon completion of their studies, ensure the acquisition of comparable competencies and which may be recognized as compulsory subjects in this program for at least half of the study obligations (ECTS credits) from the first study program, on the basis of the submitted evidence and fulfilling the conditions for enrolment in the first level university study program of Art Pedagogy can transition to the appropriate year of the first level university study program of Art Pedagogy. Students will be assigned the missing obligations they have to fulfil if they wish to graduate from the program.

Criteria for recognition of knowledge and skills, gained before the enrolment in the study programme

In the process of education at the 1st level, students can have knowledge and skills recognized, which were acquired before enrolment in various forms of formal education, which a student must prove with certificates and other documents. In the recognition process, the assessment of acquired knowledge and skills must be based on the educational competencies of the study program. Proven and well-documented competencies are recognized to candidates regardless of where and how they were obtained. The process of determining, verifying and recognizing knowledge and skills includes submitting an application, supplementing the application, examining the application at the competent authority, issuing a decision and the procedure for appealing against the issued decision. If, on the basis of the evidence provided, the competent authority determines that the knowledge and skills in content, scope and complexity fully or partially correspond to the competencies based on the educational objectives of the study program, it may recognize such knowledge. Criteria for completing the study

A student has completed their studies after completing all the obligations defined by the study program and thus collects at least 240 ECTS.
