Graduate will acquire knowledge in the fields of surface and groundwater, waste, soil, and air management planning.

Graduates of the 1st level Environmental Engineering study programme will be able to identify problems relating to the environment and organise rehabilitation activities, as well as having the skills and knowledge to plan, organise, implement and monitor preventive activities in the economy and local environments to reduce human impact on environmental components. They will have the ability to understand environmental protection as an interdisciplinary problem, which includes knowledge of technical, natural, social and other disciplines related to its management (prevention and rehabilitation). In addition, they will gain expertise by studying theoretical and methodological concepts; the ability to transfer and apply theoretical knowledge in the field of technical environmental protection in practice and solve professional and work problems, especially by finding new sources of knowledge and using scientific methods; the development of opportunities for communication in and between disciplines; professional criticism and responsibility, initiative, and independence in decision-making and work management. Graduates obtain knowledge in the field of groundwater management planning, wastewater and sewage sludge management planning, waste management planning and air protection solutions through an analysis of the immission and emission parameters of anthropogenic sources.

Text about acceptance

The study program was confirmed at the University of Maribor Senate meeting on the 17th of November 2009 and was accepted by the Council for Higher Education of Republic of Slovenia on the 25th of February 2010. The study program was confirmed again at the University of Maribor Senate meeting on the 5th of July 2016 and was accepted by The Slovenian Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education on the 19th of October 2017.

Advancement criteria of a study programme

Conditions for transition to the 2nd study year: Students advance to the 2nd study year if they pass at least 50 ECTS credits by passing the 1st year exams and if they have passed the exams in the following study subjects: Mathematical Analysis (6 ECTS) Fundamentals of Classical Physics (4 ECTS) Chemistry (7 ECTS) Environmental Protection (6 ECTS) Students who do not fulfil all the obligations for advancement may exceptionally be approved by the Commission for Study Affairs of the University Member at their request to enrol in the 2nd study year if they have fulfilled more than half of the first year study obligations (more than 30 ECTS) and have completed the above study subjects, but only if they were unable to fulfil the obligations for justified reasons which are determined in the Statute of the University of Maribor, and if it is expected that they will fulfil the obligations. Conditions for transition to the 3rd study year: Students advance to the 3rd study year if they have passed all 1st study year exams (60 ECTS) and at least 45 ECTS credit points with passed 2nd study year exams and have passed the exams in the following subjects: Fluid Mechanics (6 ECTS) Heat and Mass Transfer (6 ECTS) Environmental Impact Assessment Methodology (5 ECTS) Air Pollution and Control (6 ECTS) Students who do not meet all the obligations for advancement may, at their request, be granted enrolment in the 3rd study year by the Commission for Study Affairs if they have passed all 1st study year exams (60 ECTS) and more than half of the 2nd year study obligations (more than 30 ECTS), and have passed the above study subjects, insofar as they could not fulfil the obligations for justified reasons set out in the Statute of the University of Maribor, and if they are expected to fulfil the obligations. Repetition of the study year: A student who has not fulfilled all the obligations for transition to a higher study year may be granted by the Commission for Study Affairs of a University Member at his/her request to repeat the study year in accordance with the provisions of the Statute of the University of Maribor.

Criteria for completing separate parts of a study programme

The study programme is comprehensive and does not provide for the completion of individual parts of the programme.

Study advancement options

Postgraduate study in 2nd cycle study programme of the Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of University of Maribor or similar study programmes at other higher-education institutions. The candidates can enrol into the 2nd cycle study programmes in accordance with the conditions of the institution that offers the postgraduate study program.

Employment possibilities

The 1st- cycle academic study programme of the Environmental Engineering provides graduates - in the face of broad and qualitative competencies they have acquired during their studies - an excellent basis for employment in a variety of work organizations. In addition to their core competency to carry out engineering tasks, they have sufficiently broad theoretical knowledge that will be easily employed in various fields of environmental engineering in the economy and public services. They also have a very good graduate job opportunities in various industries, because each production associated with environmental impacts. Great job opportunities provide also public and private companies dealing with waste management and wastewater treatment.

Assesment criteria

Examination and assessment of students’ learning outcomes is carried out in accordance with the criteria and methods defined in the Rules on Examination and Assessment of Knowledge at the University of Maribor, available at https://www.um.si/univerza/dokumentni-center/akti/Strani/studij-na-um.aspx. Criteria and methods of assessing the knowledge within an individual study subject are part of the SUBJECT-SPECIFICation and are publicly available on the website https://aips.um.si/PredmetiBP5/main.asp. For all subjects in all study programmes of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, knowledge assessment is regulated by a single "Assessment Scale" which is available at https://www.fs.um.si/studij/informacije-o-studiju/izpitni-sistem/. Methods of ongoing assessment and evaluation of knowledge are encouraged, thus enabling students to monitor their own progress in their studies.

Main study programme objectives

The study programme Environmental Engineering is designed to develop the student's knowledge and competencies in individual subjects in such a way that upon successful completion of the study, the graduate possesses all general and specific competencies and thus meets the objectives of the study programme. These are knowledge and mastery of the processes that take place in the environment and industrial devices that serve to protect the environment. Knowledge of all aspects of environmental protection – soil, air, and water. Understanding the transfer of pollutants in the environment and knowledge of the interaction of pollutants with the environment. Knowledge of experimental and simulation tools for performing environmental monitoring, forecasting environmental impacts and environmental impact assessments. Accordingly, we plan to check learning outcomes, where we pay special attention to checking student competencies. For this reason, we use different types of knowledge testing – both theoretical and practical. Students are evaluated in writing, orally, through seminar presentations and by evaluating work in laboratories.

General competences of graduates, gained at a study programme

The main competencies of the graduate belong to the field of solving problems that occur in the production process or as a result of the action of man and society. The graduate of the 1st level study programme Environmental Engineering is able to identify problems related to the environment and organize activities for their remediation, and at the same time knows how to plan, organize, implement, and control preventive activities in the economy and local environments with which it contributes to diminishing of human impact on environmental components. Graduates acquire competencies in the fields of technical communication (writing a professional report on completed exercises, project or seminar, oral presentations of seminars, writing and public defence of the thesis), use of information technology (searching the world wide web, using specific software tools), organizational skills (making a time plan for the implementation of a project or diploma thesis), calculation skills (solving arithmetic tasks in tutorials, homework and exams, calculating errors in laboratory measurements), group work (group work in laboratory exercises and seminars) and creative opinions. The general competencies of the graduate are also related to the forms and methods of implementing the study programme, and their achievement is possible by considering and including the following profiles of basic knowledge and understanding: broad, analytical, and integral knowledge of the environment, ability to understand the functioning of the environment and its management, understanding relationships and connections between processes and people at different levels of their operation in relation to the environment, the ability to understand the impacts of human behaviour on the environment at different levels (locally and globally), the ability to understand environmental protection as an interdisciplinary problem, including knowledge of technical, natural, social, and other disciplines in its management (prevention and rehabilitation), expertise by studying theoretical and methodological concepts, ability to transfer and apply theoretical knowledge in the field of technical environmental protection in practice and solving professional and work problems, especially by finding new sources of knowledge and using scientific methods, developing opportunities for communication within and between disciplines, professional criticism and responsibility, initiative and independence in decision-making and work management. With the help of modelling methods, graduates are able to analyse, synthesize and predict solutions and consequences.

Subject specific competences of graduates, gained on a study programme

Subject-specific competencies are defined in the content of the 1st level study programme Environmental Engineering, which combines technical, natural and social sciences. With such an approach, sustainable development is realized, with special emphasis on sustainable development, as the environmental aspect is especially emphasized in the 1st level study programme Environmental Engineering. In addition, subject-specific competencies also derive from the appropriate integrated design of the study programme. Namely, the study programme consists of basic study subjects necessary for understanding environmental issues, then a group of subjects related to learning about the functioning of the environment and the consequences of human influences on it, and groups of subjects relating to preventive and consequential (rehabilitation) measures of individuals and social groups in the environment, with the aim of reducing negative and dangerous human impacts on the environment. In order to perform such tasks, the student must develop critical thinking to a sufficient extent, and at the same time develop a critical personality during the study, as well as develop the necessary motivation and ability for further scientific curiosity. Specialization within elective study courses enables the students appropriate professional development and their own selection of content in accordance with the external recognition of the structure of knowledge and on the basis of their own ambitions. In this way, their self-responsibility for the professional profile and the set of necessary knowledge and competencies is also strengthened. Acquired specific knowledge: • knowledge of construction and design of technical and environmental systems, knowledge and application of computer modelling of environmental phenomena, • understanding of existing and efficient new technological procedures and processes, • understanding and application of environmental analysis methods, • knowledge and application of physical modelling of environmental systems, • understanding of environmental management, • knowledge and application of advanced wastewater treatment procedures, • impact of energy production on the environment and the prevention of the negative effects of these processes, • knowledge of hazardous substances released into the environment, • knowledge of legislation, strategies, and controls in environmental protection, • understanding of transmission phenomena in environmental systems, • understanding an integrated approach to waste management, • groundwater management planning as a source of drinking water, • wastewater and sewage sludge management planning, • waste management and planning, • solving air protection by analysing immission and emission parameters of anthropogenic sources, • use of the results of other scientific disciplines in the broader field of technical environmental protection, • identifying new information and interpretations in the context of the core scientific discipline, • understanding the general structure of the basic discipline and the connection between its subdisciplines, • understanding the preparation and implementation of international environmental agreements, • understanding the organization and implementation of state and local public environmental protection services.

Access requirements

The bachelor study programme of Environmental Engineering is open to students: a) who completed the general examination before leaving the secondary school. b) who completed the professional leaving examination before leaving secondary school and an additional exam in one of the following examination subjects: mechanics, physics, mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, chemistry, biology or foreign language; the selectedexam must not be a part of the professional leaving examination. c) who completed secondary four year education program before the 01.06.1995.

Selection criteria in the event of limited enrolment

If decision about limiting the number of student entries is accepted, than the candidates from points a) and c) will be selected considering : achieved average grade of study at 1st level study programmes. - general grade of general examination or final examination 60% points (ponder 0,6) - general grade in 3. and 4. year 40% points (ponder 0,4) Candidates from point b) will be selected considering: - general grade of professional leaving examination 40% points (ponder 0,4) - general grade in 3. and 4. year 40% points (ponder 0,4) - grade from the additional exam: 20% points (ponder 0,2)

Transfer criteria between study programmes

Candidates are enrolled according to the Criteria for Transitions between Study Programmes: • in the second or higher study year of the university study programme of the 1st level of Environmental Engineering, when it comes to the termination of education according to the first study programme in the field of Engineering, Production Technologies and Construction (07); Natural sciences, mathematics and statistics (05), and continuing studies according to this study programme of the same level. Transition is possible if the candidate meets the following conditions: • meets the conditions for enrolment in the first study year of the university study programme 1st level Environmental Engineering, • transfers from the study programme, which at the end of the study ensures the acquisition of comparable competencies or learning outcomes, • upon transfer, at least half of the obligations under the European Credit Transfer System (hereinafter: ECTS) from the first study programme, which refer to the compulsory subjects of the second study programme, are recognized. Transitions between 1st level higher education study programmes. The transition from one study programme to another study programme is decided by the FS Commission for Study Affairs. In accordance with the Rules on the Recognition of Knowledge and Skills in the Study Programmes of the University of Maribor, the candidate must submit to the Faculty: • application for recognition of knowledge and skills at the University of Maribor, • certificate of completed study obligations (exams) with obtained grades and the number of credit points, • validated curricula according to which knowledge has been acquired, • proof of payment of the procedure. If at least as many ECTS credit points are recognized in the process of recognition at the time of transfer that the conditions for enrolment in the senior year of the university study programme Environmental Engineering are met, the candidate is granted enrolment in the second or higher study year of the programme. They are assigned the missing obligations they must complete if they want to graduate in the new programme. The selection of candidates in case of limited enrolment will be based on the average grade of the study. The transition from post-secondary study programmes to the 1st level university study programme Environmental Engineering is not possible.

Criteria for recognition of knowledge and skills, gained before the enrolment in the study programme

Criteria for recognition of knowledge and skills are regulated by the Rules on Recognition of Knowledge and Skills in Study Programmes of the University of Maribor which regulate the procedures for identifying, verifying, and recognizing knowledge and criteria for recognizing knowledge and skills acquired by candidates through formal and non-formal learning prior to enrolment and while studying at the University of Maribor. The basic criterion for recognition is the comparability of knowledge acquired elsewhere with learning units, skills and competences. Examination, in terms of content and complexity, whether they fully or partially correspond to the general and/or subject-specific competencies determined by the study programme.

Criteria for completing the study

A student who completes all the obligations prescribed by the study programme and thus collects at least 180 ECTS credits completes his/her studies.
