Objectives and competences

The course objective is to deepen understanding of how banks operate and to gain specific knowledge about banks' business models, the impact of banking regulations on banks, the impact of digitalisation and the green transition on them. Students develop competencies for independent selection of measures of banks' performance and competitiveness, and competences for critical analysis of banks' business models in various banking markets.

Content (Syllabus outline)

1. Comparative banking markets and structural trends of various banking systems 2. Banking markets in individual world regions 3. Bank regulation and supervision 4. Banking supervision supervision in the EU and Banking Union: Single Supervisiory Mechanism and Single Resolution Mechanism 7. Bank performance and financial ratio analysis 8. Competition on the banking market 9.. Transformation of banking (FinTech, digitalisation, non-bank providers, sustainable banking)

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

In this course students: 1. Systematically enhance their banking knowledge on banks' complex business models (PILO 2a). 2. They distinguish and compare the structural features of different banking markets of regions around the world (PILO 2b). 3. Develop the ability to assess the performance factors of banks and banking markets (PILO 2a, PILO 2b). 4. Compare regulatory approaches and methodologies in banking supervision over time and across banking markets (PILO 2a, PILO 2b). 5. Are aware of their own ethical and professional responsibility in the field of banks (PILO 4a). 6. Critically assess the sustainable and social impact of banking markets and banking sector services (PILO 4b). The PILO label (i.e., Programme Intended Learning Outcomes) defines the contribution of each listed intended learning outcome of a course towards achieving the general and/or subject-specific competencies or learning outcomes acquired through the programme.
