Objectives and competences

In this course students: - They are familiar with a historical overview of purchasing terminology - Acquire a basic knowledge of the purchasing process and purchasing decisions - Familiarise themselves with the roles of the supply base - Acquire a basic knowledge of supplier selection and the purchasing organisation - Learn about the global purchasing (sourcing) process - Learn about public purchasing (procurement) - Gain basic knowledge of supplier relationship development, supplier evaluation and certification, supplier development and supplier relationship management - Gain basic knowledge on benchmarking successful purchasing (sourcing) practices - Learn how to evaluate and improve the purchasing (supply) function of a company - They learn about the types of risks in global sourcing and how to manage them - Learn about sustainable purchasing (sourcing), the importance of early supplier involvement and rewarding supplier performance

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Students: - Understand the role of purchasing and its strategic impact on an organization's competitive advantage - Understand the differences between the traditional purchasing process, e-procurement, public procurement, and green purchasing - Know how to analyze and evaluate sourcing decisions and the factors impacting supplier selection - Know how to analyze the pros and cons of single- sourcing vs. multiple-sourcing - Understand the key characteristics of centralized, decentralized, and hybrid purchasing - Understand the opportunities and challenges of global sourcing. - Know how to explain the importance of supplier partnerships - Understand the key factors for developing successful supplier partnerships - Understand the importance and the procedure of supplier evaluation and certification - Understand the significance of supplier relationship management - Know how and why purchasing practices are benchmarked - Understand why firms want to assess their purchasing capabilities - Know the types of risks in global sourcing and understand approaches to managing them - Understand the concept and trends in sustainable purchasing - Know approaches to implementing sustainable purchasing
