Objectives and competences

Objectives: The objectives and competencies of the course are to enable students to understand the field of high voltages and large currents. Understand the importance of testing energy devices and appliances. Get to know the importance of testing energy appliances and appliances. To use and develop the ability of independent and creative solving of engineering problems. Competences: Develop skills that will enable students to independently and creatively solve engineering problems.

Content (Syllabus outline)

a) Overvoltages that occur in power systems, devices and appliances. b) Overvoltage protection by preventing the generation of large currents, reducing overvoltages and protecting buildings from the effects of lightning strikes. c) Methods and types for testing devices and appliances in energy sector. High AC and DC test voltages. d) The basic laws of electric fields. Calculation of simple electrostatic fields using Maxwell and Laplace equations. e) Basic properties of gaseous, liquid and solid dielectrics.

Learning and teaching methods

Lectures: during the lectures, the student gets to know the theoretical foundations of the course. Laboratory exercises: during laboratory exercises, the student additionally consolidates theoretical knowledge on practical examples and learns its usefulness. Computer exercises: in computer exercises, the student additionally consolidates theoretical knowledge on simulation examples.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Knowledge and understanding: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to explain the testing procedures of energy devices and appliances. Apply knowledge of high voltage technology. ESCO knowledge (learning outcome): Laws in electrical engineering (explain the theoretical bases of calculating and measuring electric fields) Switchgear (plan new device designs and corresponding tests) ESCO skill: Perform analytical mathematical calculations Carry out laboratory tests Plan engineering activities Plan group work

Transferable/key competences and other abilities: Communication skills: written expression at the written exam and oral defense of laboratory exercises from the course content.
