Objectives and competences

Objectives: The objectives of the course are that students will gain in-depth theoretical knowledge and functional understanding of the basics of electrical devices and electricity transmission. Provide basic knowledge of electrical devices and electrical and mechanical characteristics of power lines. To train the student to independently deal with electrical switchgear and devices. To train the student to calculate the chain link and the allowable tensile stress. Competences: Develop skills that will enable students to independently and creatively solve engineering problems.

Content (Syllabus outline)

a) Transmission and operation of the power system. Basic concepts, categories, network division, structural network status. Calculation of normal operating conditions and defects in electricity networks. b) Basics of three -phase electricity transfer. Basics of transformations, symmetrical components. Asymmetry, principles. c) Design and technical implementation of transmission lines. Calculation of sagging chain and permissible tensile stress. Consideration of safety distance and height. Mechanical properties of transmission lines. d) Design of power line poles. Division of transmission line poles, safety distance, forces on the transmission line pole and gravity span. e) Basics of operation and selection of appliances and devices: contactors, installation circuit breakers, fuses, separators, separation switches, circuit breakers, transformers, switch cells, insulation elements, equipment for measuring and protective circuits.

Learning and teaching methods

Lectures: in lectures the student learns the theoretical foundations of the course. Laboratory exercises: in laboratory exercises the student additionally consolidates theoretical knowledge on practical examples and learns about applicability.
