Objectives and competences

The objective of this course is for students to be able to provide knowledge about different cultures and to understand their values and ways of communication and to be able to analyze the interaction of cultures.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Culture and Nation: Definitions, Intercultural differences, Intracultural differences, Identity, Internationality. • Intercultural Communication: Cases (Unspoken rules of various cultures, Nonverbal misunderstanding, Foreign values and behaviour, Verbal and non-verbal communication), Stereotypes, Ethnocentrism, Cultural shock, Reverse cultural shock, Discrimination, Assimilation. • International Communication: International organizations, Communication in the organisation for the needs of international cooperation, Multiculturality, Working groups, Work on projects. Tools.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

On completion of this course the student will be able to • identify behavioural patterns of different cultures and evaluate how to adapt them behaviour and communication, • explain the role and importance of intercultural communication in international organizations. • evaluate the mutual impact of cultures in communication in international environments.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

• Communication skills: verbal and nonverbal expressions of other cultures. • Use of information technology: use of tools for estimation of intercultural communication, searching for sources on internet work. • Problem solving: solving and researching intercultural problems.
