Objectives and competences

The course aims to sensitize students for recognizing metaphor as a cognitive structure and activity rather than just a linguistic phenomenon and to introduce them to the theory and classification of conceptual metaphor (which is also being refered to as everyday metaphor on account of its widespread use), which was developed by Lakoff and Johnson. Another objective is to analyze and compare numerous linguistic (Slovene, German and English) and non-linguistic (visual, multimodal) instantiations of the most widespread conceptual metaphors. The skills and competences that the students acquire are transferable to different situations, environments and fields of expertise, as the metaphorical mode of thinking is present in all spheres of life.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Metaphor: a linguistic (visual, ... multimodal) and/or cognitive phenomenon? • The notion of everyday metaphor: the basics of the theory of conceptual metaphor by Lakoff and Johnson, its applicability in understanding and using everyday metaphors • The classification of the most widespread conceptual metaphors according to Lakoff and Johnson (and their successors) • A contrastive analysis of selected linguistic (Slovene, German and English) aswell as non-linguistic instantiations of the most widespread conceptual metaphors

Learning and teaching methods

• seminar (method of explanation, case studies) • tutorial (pair work, group work, presentation, debate) The information and communications technology is used for educational purposes in the teaching and learning process.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

On completion of the course the student will be able: • to recognize and understand the special nature of metaphor as a cognitive structure, that does not manifest itself solely in language, but represents one of the main modes of thinking; • to identify and categorize the linguistic instantiations of the most widespread conceptual metaphors in Slovene and German (and partly also in English) language, to analyze and compare them and describe their meaning; • to recognize the metaphorical foundation of thought and create connections between different experiential and mental domains, which will enable students to communicate more effectively.

Prerequisits for acceding the course: There are no prerequisits. Conditions for prerequisits: To be allowed to attend the written examination, the student has to actively participate in the tutorial.
