Objectives and competences

The fundamental objective of this course is to introduce students to requirements and specifics of Croatian-Slovene translation of technical texts and to advance their general translation competences. A further objective is to introduce the students to conventions of the genre and rhetorical standard, the specific skopoi, and cultural specifics as well as to genre-specific translation strategies for resolving the problems and justify one’s translation decisions. The course develops the following competences: - Knowing how to search for appropriate information to gain a better grasp of the thematic aspects of a document, - Knowing how to define and evaluate translation problems and find appropriate solutions when translating technical texts, - Knowing how to justify one's choices and decisions when translating technical texts, - Knowing how to understand and prepare analysis of the structure of a document in terms of genre conventions, - Learning to develop one's knowledge in specialist fields and applications (mastering systems of concepts, methods of reasoning) Transferable/key skills and other attributes: - the ability to use translation tools and resources

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Translation of technical texts from English to Slovene and vice versa • Introduction to the conventions of the genre and rhetorical standards • Search for appropriate information to gain a better grasp of the thematic aspects of a document • Contrastive text analysis on the micro and macro levels • Translation problems and strategies • Justification of translation choices re text type conventions, target audience, cultural specifics, etc. • Search and use of parallel texts. • Terminology research, making of glossaries. • Use of translation tools and resources.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

On the completion of the course students will be: - Able to recognize their need for specific knowledge and understanding to translate technical texts, - look for relevan information sources, - Identify and translate technical texts according to different skopoi, - Define and analyse translation problems, stages and strategies, -Justify their own translation choices and decisions.
