Objectives and competences

The objective of this course is to give basic knowledge on simultaneous and consecutive interpreting, develop listening skills, recapitulation and rhetorical competences, give knowledge necessary for simultaneous and consecutive interpreting of texts at a basic level, i.e. welcoming speeches, business talks, business negotiations, workshops etc., acquaint students with the work in interpreting booths and requirements they have to meet on the market. Competences: • communication competences; • teamwork.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Interpreting competences: basic competences for simultaneous and consecutive interpreting. • Text recapitulation: practical tutorials. • Mnemonics: memorizing exercises. • Note-taking technique. • Listening skills: development of listening skills. • Speaking skills: improvement of speaking skills in Slovene. • Simultaneous and consecutive interpreting: presentation of basic techniques. • Interpreting booths: demonstration of the work in booths. • Interpreting: simultaneous interpreting of texts at a basic level from German to Slovene and Slovene to German. • Interpreting job market: requirements for interpreters (international conferences, seminars, workshops, community interpreting).

Learning and teaching methods

• in-class participation; • assessed interpretation performance; • home assignments. The information and communications technology is used for educational purposes in the teaching and learning process.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

• student knows how to recapitulate texts; • student knows how to do basic simultaneous and consecutive interpreting of texts at a basic level into Slovene and German; • student knows to work in interpreting booths; • student knows how to use note-taking techniques.
