Objectives and competences

This course introduces students to fundamental theoretical concepts and practical aspect of terminology work in authentic communicative/professional settings. It familiarises students with sources of terminological information as well as principles and methods of terminology and terminographic work in L1 and L2s. The main objective is to promote students` instrumental-professional competence (research skills, knowledge and use different documentation sources), and in particular to develop their ability to successfully create and manage terminology and terminology databases for the purposes of inter-linugual mediation.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Introduction to terminology: basic principles and approaches • General vs. specialised language, semantic grids. • Term (term structure and creation, conceptual relations: synonymy, homonymy etc.). • Strategies for terminology search and collection, writing definitions • Creating and maintaining of simple terminology databases/glossaries

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

On completion of the course the student will be able to: • Acquire, develop and use thematic and domain-specific knowledge relevant to translation needs (mastering systems of concepts, methods of reasoning, presentation standards, terminology and phraseology, specialised sources etc.) • Indentify and reproduce the steps involved in term extraction and analysis, • Organise and manage terminology by applyying appropriate techniques

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

• Communication skills (to express in speech and writing), • Use of information technology (specialised terminology tools and corpora) • Analytical skills (ability to reason through a problem, to analyse, summarize, infer, organise and manage information appropriately) • Work in a team, including, where appropriate, in virtual, multicultural and multilingual environments, using current communication technologies
