Objectives and competences

The objective of this course is to give knowledge on simultaneous and consecutive interpreting, broaden listening skills, recapitulation and rhetorical competences in Slovene and German and to improve note-taking techniques, give knowledge necessary for simultaneous, whispered and consecutive interpreting of texts at a basic and an advanced level, i.e. welcoming speeches, workshops, non-specialised conferences etc., conference simulation. Competences: • communication competences; • teamwork.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Interpreting competences: advanced competences and techniques for simultaneous and consecutive interpreting. • Text recapitulation: practical tutorials. • Whispered interpreting: basic competences. • Mnemonics: memorizing exercises. • Listening skills: development of listening skills. • Speaking skills: improvement of speaking skills in Slovene and German. • Note-taking technique: professionalization of note-taking techniques for consecutive interpreting. • Interpreting: simultaneous and consecutive interpreting of texts at a basic level from Slovene to German and German to Slovene. • Conference simulation. • Technologies and interpreting platforms. • Computer-aided interpreting (e.g. Interpretbank). • Collaborative workspace (shared terminology collection and related texts).

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Interpreting competences: advanced strategies for simultaneous and consecutive interpreting. • Simultaneous interpreting: simultaneous interpreting of texts at an advanced level and specialised texts from Slovene to German and German to Slovene. • Consecutive interpreting: consecutive interpreting of texts at an advanced level and specialised texts from Slovene to German and german to Slovene. • Preparation: preparation for a conference in a specialised field with or without previously available materials. • Terminology: preparation of terminology for the interpreted subject area, glossaries, parallel text search.

Prerequisits

• Final exam can be taken after passing Simultaneous and Consecutive Interpreting I – German.
