Objectives and competences

The aim of this course is to provide a systematic description of English as a world language, with special focus on US American uses of English. Students will receive a rigorous and replicable system, which allows them to look at English linguistic data in a critical and systematic way.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• A pragmatic description of English, • analysis of English texts by using replicable analytical units, • description of English as a world language without relying on stereotypes.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Understanding English interaction in a systematic way. Evaluating the role of American English in international communication.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Ability to identify features of American English in spoken and written language and distinguish it from other Englishes. Ability to identify what makes English language use interesting, without relying on stereotypes. Ability to use an applied linguistic system of English in the classroom and other situations.
