Objectives and competences

The objectives of this course are: • consolidation revision and upgrading of knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary at an advanced level, • to encourage the ability to understand different English texts in a variety of contexts at an advanced level, • systematic building of English vocabulary, • to encourage students to produce their own linguistic analyses in English, • to encourage students to research language use in different English texts, • to develop the ability of the students to accurately use linguistic structures and vocabulary (e.g., tenses, verbs, collocations and idioms) through individual grammar and vocabulary exercises, and comprehension and analysis of various texts in English. • to develop the ability to understand English speakers and texts in a variety of contexts at an advanced level, • to encourage active critical participation in discussion in English language and the use of English language accurately, • to develop the ability of critical reading of texts in English via the analysis of appraisals in these, and with this the comprehension of English language as a system, • to evaluate the credibility of sources and arguments presented in them.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Further development of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills from English Language Development 1 and 2, with emphasis on reading skills and comprehension of texts, • analysis of appraisal language on selected text samples of advanced difficulty, • systematic acquisition of new vocabulary via various texts in English, • development of critical reading of texts on the basis of appraisal language (discourse semantics), • introduction of professional terminology relating to appraisal language, • development of the skills necessary for critical participation in discussion work • consolidation and development of the skills and knowledge in fields of English grammar and vocabulary (e. g., tenses, idioms, articles), • addressing the use of AI in language development; raisng awareness of its dis/advantages, • engaging with topics relevant to AI, • engaging with topics related to green transition

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

on completion of this course the student will be able to: • to accurately use English grammar and vocabulary at advanced level, • to analyse linguistically and interpret different texts, • to write a linguistic analysis, • to understand English and it use correctly in different texts, • to use accurate spoken/written English in relation to different texts and their topics, • to identify linguistic elements, including appraisal, and their purpose of use in different texts, • to understand the activity of English language as a system, • to critically read a text in English language

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

• ability to work in pairs and groups, • ability to use up-to-date sources of information and technology, • recognition of the need and willingness to further develop existing skills and knowledge due to the ever changing nature of language, • ability to become an autonomous learner, • ability to independently develop research strategies and problem solving techniques, • knowledge of how to react appropriately in conflict situations, • recognition of working of English as a system, • ability to observe English language use, and analyze and bring together ideas, • ability to work in a multilingual and multicultural environment.

Prerequisits

Attendance of 80% and regular completion of coursework are required for taking the exam.
