Objectives and competences

The aim of the course is to familiarise with and critically reflect on the origin, development, identity of Austrian literature and culture in intercultural perspective with special emphasis on its ideal and estetics specifics in relationship towards other German speaking literatures and cultures and the Slovene literature and culture.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Austrian literature and culture: definition and main characteristics of both systems in intercultural perspective • Austrian national-cultural enlightenment and the development of Austrian literary historiography (Austriaca) • Literature scientific discussion of Austrian literature: theoretical bases, methodological approaches, main contents. • Selected chapters from Austrian literature with respect to: the stylistic period ( the Pre-March period, Realism, Vienna Modernism, exile literature, contemporary literature), genre (people’s theatre, psychological short story, the peasant narrative, historical narrative, patriotic and anti-patriotic literature, engaged poetry), theme and motiv (the Habsburg myth and its deconstruction, the individual and social norms, the artist and society, ideological criticism, migration etc. • Analysis and interpretation of representative literary and nonliterary texts from the period of Vienna Modernism with respect of ideal and estetics as well as historical specifics in the development of Austrian culture. • Reception of Austrian literature and culture in Slovene communication space demonstrated on selected examples

Learning and teaching methods

Explanation, Debate, Report. The information and communications technology is used for educational purposes in the teaching and learning process.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

• demonstrate knowledge on the main characteristics of Austrian literary culture from the diachronic and synchronic viewpoint, • demonstrate knowledge of contemporary research in the field of Austrian literary studies, • aplication of modern theoretical koncepts and methodological approaches in the analysis and interpretation of representative texts of Austrian literary and essayistic writing, • analyse the phenomena and processes of the Austrian literary culture with emphasis on interculturality and integration of the literary and metaliterary production into broader social tendencies.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

• communication skills (written and oral skills in oral presentation, written skills in written exam); • use of information technology (seeking information on the Web); • team work.
