Objectives and competences

The objective of the course is to familiarise the students with the characteristics of the fictionalisation of social phenomena in a historical perspective and to convey knowledge to them about the different social functions of historical fiction within the German speaking socio-cultural context.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Historiography and historical fiction: relations between the two spheres with respect of the time and narrativity . • Main esthetic characteristic and social functions of historical narration in German literature with special emphasis on the literarization of German history of 20. century and recent history: literarization of dynastic history, of history of national cultures and intercultural confrontations, of history of social and political changes, crises and wars, literarization of holocaust and migration etc. • Short survey of poetics and production of historical literary genres from the literature of the German speaking area, with special emphasis on the historical prose – historicals novel and novella, biography, travelogue, essay etc. • Analysis of charateristics of historical narrative and interpretation of its identity function on selected literary texts wit historical theme, with the use of modern narrative and poetological typologies

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

• demonstrate knowledge of the relationships between spiritual ideational concepts, history and historical fiction, • demonstrate knowledge of the basic characteristics of the historical discourse in German literature from the diachronic and synchronic viewpoint and with respect to genre, contents and themes, • critically analyse the historical-literary production in a reception context, • application of modern theoretical concepts and methodological approaches to the analysis and interpretation of literary and semi-literary texts with historical themes, • critically analyse of construction of identity historical literary and semi literary texts and their identity function, with special emphasis on the literalization of (recent) history of german speaking aereas, • identify the forms of interaction between literature and other social (sub)systems

• communication skills (written and oral skills in homework assignements and active participation, oral and written skills in presentation and producing the seminar work); • use of information technology (seeking information on the Web); • team work
