Objectives and competences
The objectives of this course are:
• to provide insight into the preparation of linguistic material for linguistic comparison;
• to accustom students to research methods for evaluating linguistic data;
• to familiarise students with the use of linguistic software;
• to familiarize students with the creative and critical use of language technologies;
• to accustom students to professional terminology and intelligible expression;
• motivate students to transfer the acquired knowledge to other fields of study.
Content (Syllabus outline)
• Comparison of linguistic categories and elements assisted with computer programs.
• Recording of speech and transcribing texts with linguistic software.
• Linguistic corpora and concordance use.
• The use of language models and digital resources for generating texts, programming code, images, audio, and video materials, as well as for translation, searching, and reviewing scholarly literature.
Learning and teaching methods
Methods of work: explanation, demonstration, discussion, text analysis, problem-solving.
Forms of work: frontal teaching, group work, individual work.
Approaches: project-based learning, collaborative learning, problem-based learning.
Teaching and learning take place with the didactic use of information and communication technology.
Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
On completion of this course the student will be able to:
• translate speech recordings into text annotations
• analyze speech recordings with a program for acoustic phonetics
• search for linguistic patterns in linguistic corpora
• create tables and diagrams of linguistic data with a spreadsheet program,
• prepare language data for linguistic comparison with a spreadsheet program,
• compare language samples according to an assumption,
• identify significant differences between linguistic samples with basic statistic tests,
• independently use digital tools and resources in an academic environment.
