Objectives and competences
The objective of the course is for the students to familiarise with the theory and history of genres in German literature, to introduce them into the poetological analysis of literary texts and critical reflection of development of literary genres.
Content (Syllabus outline)
• Types and genres in German literature:
Definition, forms and their characteristics
• Concepts of poetological perception of literary genres: normative and historical approach
•Theory and history of selected genres in German literature: ideational, poetological characteristics and topics with respect of tradition and innovation
• Comparative aspects of German and Slovene history of literary genres on the exampla of selected genres and their major representatives
• Analysis of selected literary genres – poetry, traditional and modern novel, ballade, fairy-tale, novella, social drama etc. – applying relevant poetical typologies

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
On completion of the course the student will be able to:
• demonstrate knowledge of basic poetological questions relating to literary genres and forms,
• demonstrate knowledge of the basic terms and
concepts of literary genres,
• demonstrate knowledge of the development of theory and history of literary genres in German
Literature,
• Identify main poetological characteristics of genres and specifique procedures of articulation with regard on tradition and innovation, canon and popular literature etc.
• employ theoretical guidelines and
methodological approaches in the poetical
analysis of representative genres in German literature,
• compare some aspects of development of genres in German and Slovene literature,
• evaluate the influence of social processes and factors on theoretical discourse and development of genres in German literature.
Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes
• communication skills (writting skills in written exam and writting and oral skills in oral presentation);
• use of information technology (seeking information on the Web);
• group work (attending the seminar).

Oral presentation is prerequisite to attend the written exam.
