Objectives and competences

Students will be introduced to forms and basics of everyday life in Slovenia. They will get to know the basic home and foreign comparative literature on this particular topic, individual researches will be introduced. Main goal of the subject is to present the complex cultures, political, social and historical factors, that were inviolved in shaping everyday life. Students will gain the ability of critique of actual everyday events with the help of ethnological methods. They will gain knowledge of basic methodological approaches of ethnographic research on present topic (use of archive and written sources, i.e. diaries, letters, newspapers, fieldwork, lifestories, participant observation)

Content (Syllabus outline)

Subject handles the phenomena of everyday life in Slovenia in comparison to Europe, especially from 19. cent until today. Everyday life is taken as an area of subjective and objective construct of social reality with special factors: space, time and social group. The subject includes ethnological handling of different areas of everyday life: residence culture and architecture (dwelling space, equipment and function, major types of buildings in Slovenia, modern dwelling architecture), nutrition culture (food as social activity and cultural good, invoations in nutrition, regional and social characteristics of nutrition, nutrition outside of home), clothing culture (outfit as a form of nonverbal communication, fashion), family life (family construction, types and relationships), customs, rituales, calendar and personal celebrations opposite to everyday life. Within the subject there is also epistemology and methodology of ethnological research of everyday life.
