Objectives and competences

The object of this is course is to understand relevance of philosophy for psychology, and to identifiy ethical and social questions in psychology together with its solutions and criticism.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Relations between psychology and philosophy. The mind-body problem: dualism and physicalism (functionalism, behaviourism, eliminativism). Qualitative states as a challenge to physicalism. Perception in philosophy and psychology. Emotions. Social psychology and its links with social philosophy and ethics. Study of language in philosophy and psychology. Ethics and psychology.

Lectures with discussion; Seminars: presentations and discussion.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

On completion of this course the student will be able to: • Knowledge and understanding: understand the mind-body problem and its fundamental solutions, understand why qualitative states are seen as a challenge to physicalism, understand philosophical implications of pschological study of perception and emotions, understand a relevance of ethics for psychology. • Use and analysis: analyse and construct sound arguments useful to psychology, recognize logical fallacies, methodological errors, rhetorical devices or unexamined conventional wisdom in them, invent or discover cases to support or challenge a position, and distinguish those that are relevant for psychology from those that are not. • Synthesis and evaluation: recognize ethical issues in psychology and evaluate them properly, recognize sense and significance of scientific discoveries for further use, evaluate views and arguments of others tolerantly and openly.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Communication skills: oral expression at oral exam, writing expression at completing colloquiums, writing expression at making a seminar, writing expression at doing house works, oral expression at collaborating in a discussion, presentation. Use of information technology: search for information on the internet. Organisation skills: creating a time table for completing a seminar. Problem solving: scientific-philosophical problems.

Prerequisits

Prerequisites for attending the course: None. Prerequisites for completing the course: Each of the mentioned commitments must be assessed with a passing grade. Passing grade of all of the assignments is required for taking the oral exam. At least 75% attendance at lectures and 75% attendance at tutorials is required.
