Objectives and competences
Student are familiar with the basics of theoretical thinking; they are familiar with the fundamental concepts of the theory of literature; they are familiar with the questions of the existence, functions, structuration and evaluation of literary texts; they are familiar with the basic categories of narratology, theory of the lyric and drama, and the ways of their meaningful application to practical work with literary texts; they are familiar with the development of the discipline from Antiquity to the present; they are familiar with the main branches and trends of the discipline; they know tools for analysing, interpreting and evaluating literary texts.
Content (Syllabus outline)
The course examines the concept of literary theory, its characteristics and functions in relation to other disciplines of literary studies, and outlines its historical development up to contemporary methodological approaches (e.g. cognitive narratology, postcolonialism, feminist literary studies). It looks in detail at the main literary-theoretical disciplines: ontology, phenomenology, axiology, and above all, literary morphology and genealogy. Using selected texts from Slovene and World literature, it discusses the key concepts of narratology, theories of the lyric and drama, versology, rhetoric and stylistics; narrator, focalization, literary character, narrative time and space, narrative techniques, lyrical subject, dramatic subject, action in drama, motif, theme, rhetorical figures, rhythm, verse, etc.
Learning and teaching methods
Lectures, collaborative and independent analysis of works, discussion, seminar work, brainstorming method, case study method.
The information and communications technology is used for educational purposes in the teaching and learning process.
Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
Student are able to use basic terminology of literary theory and are able to analyse, interprete and evaluate poetry, prose and drama texts independently; they are able to pose and solve a literary-theoretical problem in an argumentative way.
