Objectives and competences

Students develop the basis for posing and solving literary-theoretical problems; they acquire literary-theoretical terminology in the field of genre theory; are familiar with various historical and contemporary approaches to genre theory and, on this basis, understand the prototypical characteristics of literary types, forms, kinds and genres and their historical variability; are familiar with the key theories of the individual genres (epic, novel-tragedy, novella, short story, etc.).

Content (Syllabus outline)

The course examines the history of genological classification of literary texts, with a particular emphasis on the distinction between essentialist and non-essentialist approaches to determining the genre of texts. In addition to examining the various notions of the literary types or forms (the lyric, epic, drama), it looks in detail at the various theorisations of certain literary genres (epic, novel, tragedy, comedy, novella, short story, etc.) and semi-literary genres (essay).

Learning and teaching methods

Lectures, collaborative analysis of works, discussion, case study method, seminar exercise. The information and communications technology is used for educational purposes in the teaching and learning process.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Students are able to use literary genre theory terminology; they are familiar with the characteristics of literary types, kinds and genres. They are able to independently identify and present the prototypical features of a text in an argumentative manner, on the basis of which they determine its genre; they are able to independently pose and solve a literary-theoretical problem.
