Objectives and competences

1. Getting to know the share of non-linguistic (social and historical) factors of the Slovene (national) development. 2. Forming view on the social intermediary role of the literary language in the past and present. 3. Sociability of the Slovene language, judgment of the positive and negative changes in the history of the Slovene linguistic thought. 4. Creation of the background for the establishment of linguistic and national identity. 5. Students are acquainted with the Slovene language as a cultural, national and political agent, they get to know the relationship to the language through centuries, language dynamic, norm and regulation.

Content (Syllabus outline)

1. Methodology of the researches regarding history of the Slovene literary language. 2. Periodization of development of the Slovene literary language; historical factors of the development in particular periods; developmental mile stones and fundamental agents of development; main characteristics of particular period. 3. Pre-literary written culture. 4. Central concept of the literary language. 5. West Slovene literary linguistic concept. 6. Compromise language usage. 7. Linguistic issues in the texts of Protestant authors. 8. Diversity and archaism linguistic-historical development. 9. Opinions of (amateur) linguists and their contribution to development of the Slovene literary language. 10. Development of variation.

Learning and teaching methods

Lectures and research seminar, group and individual work (individual assignments and guided individual study), analysis and comparison of the texts, confronting the problems, positive and negative solutions, guided home work. The information and communications technology is used for educational purposes in the teaching and learning process.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Students understand the concept of the Slovene language from the historic point of view. They are familiar with pre-literary and literary tradition, variants of the Slovene literary language and formation of the uniform literary norm in the middle of the 19th century. They understand language as the (most) important recognizable attribute of Sloveneness in the European Union; they understand the struggle for individuality of the Slovene language as precondition for political and national independence – decisive changes in the history of the Slovenes were connected to changes in language consciousness. They are capable to use the acquired knowledge for linking contemporary linguistic and political issues (Slovene language issue was always a political issue as well), and the role of the Slovene language in the European Union. / (searching these connections in practice). Students are able to evaluate positive and negative tendencies in development of the Slovene language and to transfer them into a contemporary linguistic theory and practice.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Knowledge of the history of the Slovene literary language enables students to understand the contemporary literary norm and regulation;it proofs that nothing concerning language is final and permanent (languages appear, change and die out ); that language cannot be beautiful or ugly, correct or incorrect, instead it needs to be considered as afunctionally adequate language.
