Objectives and competences

Subject analyzes non-European cultural societies and their first contacts with the Europeans. It follows geographical discoveries on all continents and seas, which are followed by colonial conquerors, from the treaty between Spain and Portugal in Tordessillas in 1494 onward. A very important teaching contents emerges with the spread of colonialism - world economic exchange (import - export, main trade routs, slavery, competition). At the same time it comments relations between colonial great powers in newly founded colonies and their recurring influence on the relations in Europe. Attention is intended for some Asian Empires (Turks, Persia, Mogul Empire, China) and for the Russian conquest of Siberia. With the example of the settlement of Europeans in North America it demonstrates the beginnings of European emigrations.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Period of the European exploration and discoveries. European transatlantic expansion: Spain, Portugal, Holland, England or Great Britain, France. The expansion of Russia in Europe and in Asia. Colonial America. The meaning of international commerce of Black Africa and its countries. China and East Asia during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Countries in Southeast Asia and the arrival of Europeans. Renewed rise of Islam. Mogul Empire and the rise of British influence in India. French and British engagement for the domination in colonies and the formation of world's economic system in the 18th century.

Learning and teaching methods

Explanation, work with sources, seminar, individual study, seminar assignment, presentation of seminar assignment, discussion. The information and communications technology is used for educational purposes in the teaching and learning process.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Student is able to evaluate the most important complexes of the world history in the Early Modern Period.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Student acquires the capabilities of comparative treatment of individual ethnical elements and countries or historical processes at all. He gains the ability to critically assess all forms of messages that have the value of historical sources, and to distinguish between inducements, motives and consequences, considering the interdependence of different occurences, continuity and discrepancies in the historical development.
