Objectives and competences

Subject Historical Auxiliary Sciences intends to inform students about basic skills of historical research with special emphasis on fundamental sources of the Slovene ethnic territory.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Subject is composed of two parts: the treatment of the so called historical auxiliary sciences and the systematic treatment of unpublished sources, historical periodicals and publications, which are in connection with the history of Slovenes. First part occupies the presentation and the work methods of individual historical auxiliary sciences, which help historian to read texts, enable him to establish the authenticity of documents, their dating and the interpretation of contents: diplomatics, palaeography, chronology, sfragistics and genealogy. Epigraphy, numismatics and heraldry are also occupied with the interpretation of some written and material sources. Second part deals with the presentation and treatment of unpublished historical sources and with the places where they are kept (archives and libraries home and abroad), and also with the acquaintance with published sources, periodicals and the most important publications.

Learning and teaching methods

Explanation, work with sources,practical exercises, seminar, individual study, seminar assignment, presentation of seminar assignment, discussion. The information and communications technology is used for educational purposes in the teaching and learning process.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Student develops ability of use of historical auxiliary sciences, which are essential for the comprehension and the research of history, and is able to compare and include them into scientific research.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Student is able find and use proper sources, relevant domestic and foreign literature and is able to analyze and synthesize selected themes.
