Objectives and competences
Student recognizes political, economic, social and cultural meanings of the development of the universal Roman Empire, the expansion of Latin culture and Early Christianity. He gains extensive insight into Roman era and also into decline of antiquity in the today's Slovene territory, as well as into development of the early Christianity in the area. Based on this, he/she is able to comparatively evaluate main processes in the Roman history and its influence on the further historical development.
Content (Syllabus outline)
The Old Italy. Etruscans. The founding of Rome, consolidation and expansion of its authority. The Period of Kings. Rome and Hellenic world. The Punic wars. Economic and social conditions in the time of the Late Republic. Civil wars in the first century. Roman army and its organization. The first and the second triumvirat and the foundation of the principate. The role of the Senate. Roman Empire in the period of the Julio – Claudian dynasty, Flavian dynasty, and in the period of the adopted emperors. The Severan dynasty, the period of military emperors and the crisis of the Roman Empire. Roman law. Economic, cultural and religious history. Reforms of Diocletian and Constantine. Mitraism. The expanison of Christianity, role, influence and meaning. The division of the Roman Empire into Western and Eastern part. The Dominate era. Roman Empire in the 4th and 5th centuries. Roads. Important administrative, commercial and religious centres. Reasons of the fall of the Roman Empire. Slovene territory before the Roman arrival in the Eastern Alps in the blooming and late antiquity. Roman settlements in Slovenia and in neighbouring regions. Christianity in Slovenian territories in Antiquity. Literary sources for the ancient history of Slovenian lands.
Learning and teaching methods
Explanation, individual study, work with sources, discussion. The information and communications technology is used for educational purposes in the teaching and learning process.
Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
Student is able to analyze important occurences, processes and changes in the period of the Roman Antiquity.

Student acquires capabilities of comparative treatment of individual ethnical elements and countries or historical processes at all. He gains the ability to critically assess all forms of messages that have the value of historical sources, and to distinguish between inducements, motives and consequences, considering the interdependence of different occurences, continuity and discrepancies in the historical development
